Exactly. I hate using "Cali" but find myself doing it more often when typing. I never use it in conversation though.

It's called the Internet. When you have to type anything that can be truncated, it becomes truncated. Especially when you are typing it all the time. This is why they have dictionaries to make sense of all the stuff we end up truncating or changing. Would I say it verbally? No.
