I never started calling it "Cali" till I moved back here. I lived in California for 16 years.

Calling San Francisco "Frisco" is the ultimate "no-no" to native San Franciscans - they refer to it as "The City" or "SF" just like New Yorkers refer to their big city as "The City" or New York. I don't know WHY it is such a big deal, but I guess it really does irk some people lol.
I agree that it should either be CA, Cal., California, or Calif. I also agree with the SoCal/NorCal abbreviations. I, however, don't like Cali. I agree with the other posts that it is a city in Colombia.

Being from SoCal, I've never heard San Francisco referred to as "The City," but have heard it called "SanFran" and "Frisco." I've also heard Sacramento referred to as "Sacto."

To me, being from a rural area, even Bakersfield is considered "The City," as are Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Palmdale, Lancaster, and so on.

The quotes about Needles and Blythe are similar to the names I've heard, although they were "Nettles" and "Blight."

One other pet peeve of mine is the abbreviation LA. That means Louisiana. Los Angeles should be abbreviated L.A.

While we are on the subject of abbreviations, can anyone tell me why abbreviation is such a long word?

That's almost like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. "The world may never know."

I wonder if the thread came from my thread entitlted "What to know more about So.Cali., before moving here.

If so, trust me, when I speak to others I say Southern California, but when I'm typing I get so tired of typing Southern California that I just say So. Cali. no disrepect though.

After thinking about it for several hours I think it is derivative from Calixico and Mexicali. Both towns near the Califorina and Mexico border.

Not polite in any language!
