Wondering if you Californians know of a walk-able town with shops and galleries, in a relatively, moderately-priced area ,(Not Carmel, San Fran.,Santa Barb.,LA, etc...) with nice weather, not too big or small, pretty tolerant of newcomers??? OK,

I KNOW, I'm asking a silly question, but I'm Really Moving now, been sitting on the fence for 4 years, and still investigating places. Of course, my ideal place, as an artist, would be prob. Carmel or Santa Barb,or LaJolla, but I can't afford them. So, maybe somewhere within driving distance of them?

I don't know California at all. Just been a couple of times to Santa Ana, and Poway (visited family there.) But, if we're talking about moving because of weather, you do have the best in the US, imho.

I loved Santa Fe,& Alb. NM, but there's no Ocean there, and not sure if we can live land-locked.

thanks, iriegirl.

Check out the central coast town of San Luis Obispo. Population is roughly 45,000. It is 10 miles from the ocean at Morro Bay. This is where Hwy 1 begins its BEAUTIFUL run north up the coast right on the water. Several artist communities are on this road. Harmony and Cambria. It will be worth checking into. Good luck!!

Seal Beach, Belmont Shore, and Naples are 3 cities/areas right next to each other than match your description. They are not driving distance from one of the areas you spoke of though

Wow! Thanks everybody, for all your suggestions.

We will def check out those towns, they all sound interesting, and I love the names,...Harmony, Seal Beach, Naples, Capitola, Cambria,
they sound so artsy and appealing. ( Not like nj,...Piscataway,Paramus, Wall, Brick, Long Branch, Jackson, Trenton,Camden...no offense to anyone.)
I guess it wasn't such a ridiculous question after all.
Can't wait for our house to sell, and be on our adventure. I'm thinking of reducing the price so we don't have to wait too long.
peace & have a good weekend everybody.
