I don't think there is much money in Santa Rosa or Petaluma. Better chance on the peninsula. Good luck.

Maybe because they're very expensive + the housing shortage is acute from the recent fires? These are all very charming small cities, and that drives up prices. I just did a quick on-line search of the whole area and found no houses under $500K. You can get a 1000 sq ft mobile home in Petaluma for $165K if that's what you are looking for.

I'm also betting the interior design business in that area is pretty saturated. You will have some thin times until you can forge an association with some real estate agents or other local businesses (e.g., furniture stores) to build a reputation.

You might look at Folsom and Granite Bay east of Sacramento.

OP, take a look at rents for apartments and homes on Peninsula. San Jose might be a good place to live. You could be looking at rent of $3,000 or more for 1 bedroom.

While there is some serious money in the wine country (as a previous poster has listed out in more detail), I don't think the density is high enough to support a new design business. You could certainly serve this area but you may need to widen your base of operations.

OP, Petaluma and the north bay in general are very expensive. Think $600k. Folks who live here spend their money on mortgage so interior design would not be big business. The money is in Silicon Valley but now you're talking $1 million to live in a run down/tear down house. I'd consider looking somewhere else.
