Expensive: kind of! Housing is way less, but salaries are also less. If you live cheaply, you can make out like a bandit tho.

Things have certainly changed since the last time I was in CA in 1993.

I was in Fresno in 1993 and at that point in time didn't seem bad.

Big Bear would be nice, or Idyllwild. I think living up in the mountains would be nice. But those mountain towns often have a fair amount of riff-raff (as do many small, rural towns). I don't want to live someplace populated by meth heads.
But Big Bear and Idyllwild are pretty places. I'd prefer Idyllwild because it's not as well known as Big Bear and also because it doesn't have any ski areas, so you don't get the huge influx of ski people in the winter.

You can also add the cities of Anza and Aguanga to your list. Both areas are still relatively undeveloped and have a lot of open land and therefore have a "country" feel. I'd prefer Anza because it's higher in elevation (just under 4,000' - -depending where you are in town) and therefore cooler in the summer.

Great point you have there.

90s were pretty wild, actually. No three strikes and other laws had criminals running amok. Violent crime is way down from back then. 2018 will see about 25-35 murders for fresno(520k population), which will put it among the safest large cities in the us.
Property crime is down too, but not far down enough to be bragging about. Sacramento needs to amend the prop47 law before youll see a large dro p.

I live in a nice part of CA and houses are 25% of what you would pay in LA or the Bay Area.
Where in CA are homes 25% of the coastal areas?

Hmm... I haven't gotten that impression from sites like Zillow, etc.

I must be missing it.
