Is that dueling banjos I hear?

Awesome replies! Thanks!

This issue is key as well. It's yet another instance of proximity to services like driving distance, but being disconnected physically and virtually is tough in today's world, because you need to replace one with the other, either for work, communication, or hobbies. I know my parents have crappy internet just outside CO Springs and its a big drain for productivity their self employed business.

I guess it just boils down to that if a place isn't tourist level natural beauty and there's no connecting infrastructure artery or legs from a bigger metro, it's just hard to live isolated and it will be cheap cause no one else is there.

Phil, you should look at Siskiyou and Shasta Counties as well (in addition to Butte).

I was actually thinking about moving to Alturas in Modoc County at one point in time, owned a place up there for a while but never made the move.

My favorite place i saw up there was actually Burney Falls in Shasta County, it's just off 299 between Redding and Alturas. Get there nice and early when it's not crowded and walk one of trails, it's spectacular if you like waterfalls and nice green mountainous terrain during Spring/Summer.
