Hello, my wife and I are planning on moving to Southern California in the near future. I am looking to take up a trade beforehand so that we can make ends meet once we get there. What I was wondering is if anyone who currently lives in SoCal can give me some suggestions as to which trades are most sought after in that area and pay decently. A couple ideas that have been floating around my head are Welder and Automotive Technology. But, any information and/or suggestions from anyone living in the area would be greatly appreciated.

The trades more associated with home repair and construction---plumbing, electrical, drywall, flooring, etc.

Big shortage. Lots of old timers are retiring. It beats you up. 20 years and my shoulders and knees are shot. And it takes 5 years to get a new guy seasoned and journeyed out to a journeyman.
I’m getting at least one or two sometimes three calls a week to run projects.

I just had the transmission rebuilt in my truck by a family-run business. Pretty lucrative. They only do transmissions and the cheapest one is probably the kind they did on my old 93 Nissan pickup, and it cost $2200 and then they offered to replace the rear main seal for another $200.

My regular mechanic has 3 kids in college in CA, and we're talking Berkeley law school and two other CA universities for his other kids. He has one employee. So, if you could get set up as a mechanic yourself, as your goal, you wouldn't necessarily have to do all the work yourself. He also has a smog test operation right next to his mechanic shop in an auto strip mall type of place in San Jose.

I also know of a guy in the LA area who just specializes in auto air conditioning, especially in kits he installs in classic cars that didn't originally come with a/c.
