Tonight's incident report, much the same. 65% contained, still chewing up about 10,000 acres/day. Total deaths 77 (thankfully not going up fast). Now over 10,000 homes listed as burned, probably still inventorying that, and losing a few more as it goes. Winds were predicted to come back up but doesn't sound like it's giving them any new problems, as yet. Private shelters are all marked full; county fairgrounds are opened for use.

It's getting pretty darned cold up that way. Why hasn't FEMA brought in trailers for those displaced like they did with Katrina? This is ridiculous. Leaving all those people out in the cold at night.

Aren't there buildings on the fairgrounds?

FEMA trailers are stored in Arkansas and Mississippi, probably 3 days away under ideal conditions, and you've got to line up truckers to tow 'em. However, it's not that simple:

(To what degree NPR exaggerates the situation, I don't know.)

Any formaldahyde is probably leeching from substandard interior paneling. Could probably be ripped out and replaced cheaper than a whole new monkey (you seen the prices on even bottom-end travel trailers nowadays??!), but that's hardly an instant job. And after sitting this long, chances are it's mostly gone, but there's still liability if it's not.

We didn't want to contact The Hartford before, in the first days after leaving Paradise, because we had no idea what happened to our home. There is an interactive map where we can look up every street and it shows which home is burned or damaged or standing, but they haven't got to our street yet, Redbud Drive.
So this morning I called The Hartford. Hardly any waiting, 2 minutes later I was talking to "Marie" and gave her all the data and numbers, e mail and the rest. She was easy and very helpful. I didn't have the policy number, but she could find us from the car insurance in seconds.
Mary told us the name of our assigned adjuster, his phone number, and explained us that the adjuster will call back within 24 hours.

The adjuster called back maybe 3 hours later and explained that all our living and housing costs are covered. The house is insured to $ 374 K. If it burned, we get that amount, I think. If the house survived, any damages are covered and also our lodging is covered until we can move back.
He asked me if we need any cash, but we are fine in that regard.
It was a pleasant experience, I think we are in good hands with the Hartford for the time being. I will update if there are new developments.

My heart goes out to the desperate folks living in tents and cars, comparing to them we live like royalty with heat, TV and microwave.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and we appreciate your concern.

LA Times linked to this CalFire site that has many photos of destroyed and damaged homes and other buildings in the Paradise area: ArcGIS Web Application
You can click on a house icon and see the estimated damage, and there are jpg attachments, which are photos of the residence. Very, very sad.

Glad the Hartford has been responsive, mgforshort. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they settle quickly and fairly with you. My heart also goes out to all those people who are now homeless and living in their cars or tents. Especially with the colder weather and rain on the way.

One thing I thought about this afternoon was, given that it appears many of the victims in the fire were elderly, and their entire homes were also destroyed, I'm wondering how their estates will be handled. Let's say a person only had a copy of their will in their own home, and no other copies existed. I wonder what the probate process would be under those circumstances. Its bound to be a very complicated process for many families.
