This is a scary video to watch, but it captures what people felt who were fleeing this fire. Note that its daytime when this video was filmed.

Wow. There's a clue how thick the smoke was -- coulda been midnight.

Here's a guy who's posted some aftermath videos, showing what's still standing or not:

This was up in Glacier Park a year ago. It says in the description that they were blocked by a fallen tree, had to reverse course, and were eventually saved by park rangers in a boat (must have been up by the lake). They are very lucky. The real danger in deep-woods fires isn't being cooked; it's being suffocated.

As of yesterday, 1202 people listed as missing.
https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/...119-story.html

Probably half of those are 'lost' in the chaos of shelters still inventorying people, but still way too many likely to be found in the rubble.

If any good comes of these fires, it may be new data on building survivable structures.

Sorry for the mixup, my you tube link on iPad has no such description and has it mixed in with Paradise videos. Glad they were saved.

Yeah, that's part of why I have my browser set to an old version, because with current browser version half the descriptions disappear. Still an informative view from inside a forest fire, and lucky lucky people.

Fortunately, as of about 7:30 am California time on Tuesday, the number missing has dropped to around 700:

I am the most cynical and pessimistic man I had ever known; my mother agreed. I prepare for the worst and if doesn't happen I relax.
Anyway, our house appears to be standing.

When I do a search on the interactive map, they show both neighbors on the right and on the left burned to the ground. They only take photos of the ruins. In the corner of both photos I can see a part of our home, only a small part, but standing.

The standing homes have no pictures.

From this I calculated that a neighbor across from us, the house next to them, and another house on the street were not burned. The main question is, how much damage happened, something which can't be determined until a close inspection.

The residents of Magalia started moving back home, but they need to take a very long detour on bad roads because they are not allowed to go through Paradise yet. A man from Magalia told me they have power, landline, Internet and gas (propane only).

When these people are able to return there should be less pressure on the shelters, which is a very good news, indeed.

Something else: starting Wednesday we should get several inches of rain. This will finish the fire and wash off the ashes, to a degree. The danger of mudslides exist, but our terrain isn't very steep in most of Paradise, with a few homes built on the canyon's edge as the only concern.
Looking at photos and videos, it is amazing, many homes are standing, in perfect shape, even the plastic trash cans are there on the street, no sign of smoke or melting.

A good article on how this type of fire spreads:
https://www.latimes.com/local/califo...120-story.html

You could see this with some of the saved homes -- burned spots where embers blowing along the ground fetched up against trailer skirting or wooden porches, and where someone managed to put it out before it got into the main structure.

I'm thinkin' strategically-placed cinder block walls could be at least somewhat protective here.
