The sheriff is taking appointments from people who have essential needs to get something from their home in Paradise. Like picking up medicine, a car, or a pet ( if didn't die yet). They get a police escort and if they don't leave after 15 minutes they can get arrested.

I think Butte County blew it, big time. Arresting residents while the looters sneak in at night through the woods.

Suddenly I understand the survivalist mentality, keeping guns and ammo at home, canned foods everywhere, your own well and generator.

Then there is "Nextdoor". I learned more from Nextdoor than all other sources combined. It's not just gossip anymore.

They've instituted a curfew, presumably to deal with that very problem, but you can't patrol everywhere at once.

Official wildfire recovery information from the County of Butte and Town of Paradise
November 30, 2018

A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is a place for residents to connect with the resources needed to recover and rebuild. Local, state, and federal agencies along with community organizations will assemble to answer questions about disaster assistance. Two DRCs are now open to the public 7 days a week from 9 am to 7 pm -- one is at the Chico Mall (Former Sears building) and one is in Oroville.

Register for FEMA Disaster Assistance/SBA Low-Interest Loans
Community members who suffered losses from the fires are urged to register for disaster assistance with FEMA. Those who applied for assistance from FEMA and were contacted by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), may also submit a loan application.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Community Meeting: Disaster Assistance Programs and Services
Saturday, December 1, 10 am - 3:30 pm
Woodland Opera House, 340 2nd Street, Woodland
Community members are encouraged to attend to learn about available programs and sign up for disaster assistance. This community meeting is an opportunity for those who have evacuated to Yolo county and neighboring communities.

LATEST NEWS

Winter Storm Warning
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 10 pm tonight through 10 pm December 1.
12” – 24” of snow is forecasted in areas over 4,000 feet. It may be extremely difficult or impossible to travel in mountain areas above 4,000 feet. Expect major travel delays. Chain controls may be required.
Be prepared for winter driving conditions if you must travel.

Law Enforcement Escort Information
Due to the large number of public requests for escorts into the evacuation order areas of Paradise, Magalia and Concow, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and Paradise Police Department have established a process to provide law enforcement escorts for critical needs. New procedures have been established to minimize confusion and provide better service to our community. At this time, Law Enforcement will only be providing escorts for a limited number of priority circumstances.

Students Return to School as Recovery Efforts Continue
Butte County students and educators will celebrate their return to school on Monday, December 3, after several weeks of displacement following the Camp Fire.

Town of Paradise Residents Under Curfew
As of November 29, a curfew is in effect until further notice. Between 8 pm to 6 am, no person shall be on a public street, avenue, alley park or other public space. This curfew does not apply to police officers, peace officers, firefighters, utilities workers, or other authorized emergency personnel.

Evacuees Asked to Resume Care of Animals Sheltering in Place
Animal rescue field groups have been providing feed and care to animals sheltering in place within the fire affected areas. These areas are still under evacuation orders. Once evacuation orders are lifted, owners returning to the area will be asked to resume care of their animals.

Finally heard from my friends who got burned out of Magalia ... they lost everything, but at least they're safe. Not precisely the retirement adventure they'd planned...

Glad they are OK! (At least physically. Emotionally is a whole 'nother thing, I'd imagine.)

There was a piece today in the Sacramento Bee about the real estate boom in Chico, which is a town of 90,000 residents, only 14 miles from Paradise.
Homes for sale get offers 50 K over the asking price, but the offers are not accepted because others are offering even more.
The mayor of Paradise made an offer on several homes but lost out to higher bidders until they found a home (they were able to offer more than anyone else). They already received their insurance settlement, so the cash was there.

The Catholic schools in the area are offering free tuition for the remainder of the year plus supplies and uniforms for students displaced by the fire. Still, Paradise Unified estimates only 50% of its students will enroll in the area. Many have left as their parents relocate after losing their homes and jobs. Its kind of sinking it the kind of trauma the whole county is going to experience as so many leave (kind of like what happened after Hurricane Katrina, only on a smaller scale).
I've been wondering what happened to businesses in Paradise. I read about a guy (and I don't think he was the only one), who stuck it out, throughout the fire, because his vehicle was disabled, and he had too many pets to move by vehicle, anyway. He worked for a local law office as a paralegal. I wonder how LE are handling the comings and goings of residents who miraculously survived with their homes intact, and I'm also wondering what those residents are doing for income, now. I'm not sure, but the paralegal looked like he might be old enough to apply for Social Security, but still, he'd probably rather have a job. I wonder if there will be. a surge of job applications in the Chico and Sacramento areas.

Job income-wise, will probably use EDD benefits for full 6 months. Then, I wonder if these benefits would be extended for a longer period. There's EDD disaster assistance for those who normally wouldn't qualify:

I was just reading that article and I thought of you, mgforshort. Maybe this means that your home will sell quickly once you are able to put it up for sale. People seem desperate for any house to live in: https://www.sacbee.com/news/business...t=more_stories

We read nextdoor quite a bit after the Carr Fire. I found it to be about 50/50 of unfounded gossip and truth.
Maybe you’re have a better experience.
