I don't know of anyone who has ever lived in Sacramento and cared about trying to compete with the Bay Area.

They're very different and everyone I have ever known is quite fine with that, whether they lived in one or the other.

No.

I think that the answer to "the real question" is ... nobody with even half a life or half a brain. I certainly don't care what anybody thinks of either the Bay Area or Sacramento.

What a weird thread. Who thinks about these kinds of things? Pick a city and live in it. Cities can't be "compared" to each other and why would anyone want to?

The entire Central Valley of Bakersfield, Fresno, Sac, and others are overshadowed by The Bay, LA, and at times SD. I grew up in Fresno and its always been like this. When people say 'Cali' 9 times outta 10 they're talking about a coastal city. Tv, film, etc is always about the coastal cities. I have no problems with it.. it is what it is if you ask me.

It's more like Austin overshadows San Antonio, which is only 35 miles south of it.

Sac is overshadowed in that prominent civic and cultural events found in the bay, are not found in the Sac area.

For example, if one wants to see a ballgame, world class art museum, attend a world class private college, visiy an aquarium, many neighborhoods with character, than you have to go to the bay.

Sac region on a whole is a once depopulated urban center trying to bounce back. Surrounded by suburbs that are 100 years old and newer as you go further out.

It really is the state capitol and the military that made the town. Now with the military gone, it just government.

Like all Valley cities, it's got a small town feel at heart. The most valuable local company is Raley's, the Grocery store. Maybe some regional offices here and there, and smaller local companies. But no Fortune 500 companies, after Tower Records folded.

My observation if a person uses the term “Cali” 9 times out of 10 they don’t live in California.

Well, by Chimerique's standards, where Lake Tahoe is greater Sacramento, then maybe San Antonio is part of Greater Austin. You know what, guys? Austin's got the Alamo, Sea World, and Riverwalk. Oh, and the George Bush Pres. Library and Texas A&M! And even Waco's Baylor University!
