Do the people who move out of California tend to be those whose family moved to the state in the post-WWII boom years, and may themselves have been born in another state?

I can only go off what I see, but the overwhelming majority (probably 90%) are from out of state to begin with. Most are in their 20’s & 30’s that came out after school (some for it) and either return home (or the region), or leave to start/advance their careers. And yes being able to buy a home plays a role as to why they are leaving, but more so they want their kids/future kids to be near family.

This is based off of me owning a bar at the beach (and working in one for many years before that) and seeing my staff and regulars come and go over the years.

I’ll add that my mom has had a few friends that have left the state. Some cashed out and went to AZ/NV so they could still be close to their kids/grandkids, and some went cross country to be near them.

Some are.

I was born and raised on the east coast, and moved to CA when I was 22 years old. I've lived in SoCal and NorCal. I moved away almost 10 years ago, when I was 48 years old.

My husband is a 3rd generation Californian, all in NorCal.

We moved to Texas, without knowing a soul, no jobs and no place to stay. Within a few months we had jobs (that we are still working at to this day) and a place to rent. I had visited a few times in my life, but he had never been here. We don't regret the move one bit.

Yes, from one couple we know. They are not native Californians, they both came from different states.

My paternal grandparents moved to SoCal from Idaho during the Great Depression, (for economic reasons). My dad was born in SoCal as were his children, (Mom was from the mid-west.) Upon retirement, I moved back to Idaho. I was the last of my dad's six children left in the state. All the rest bailed long ago.

My family moved to Southern California in 1974. I will be leaving the state late this year or early next year.

Based on a handful of member here who have varying opinions, it's impossible to say who or why these people left the state. And the mass majority of people who have moved out of the state most likely aren't members of city-data.

Yes, it was a good recommendation.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles county. Moved with my husband (he was born in L.A. but moved back east as a toddler, then back to L.A. at sixteen) to San Diego in 2000. In 2017 we moved to Northern Virginia. We are never going back. The COL, plus the never ending heat and fires did us in. With the huge amount of equity we cashed out in the sale of our home, we were able to buy a nice house on just under 2 acres of land. Love it.
