Point of the article (and thread) isn’t politics ... nor whether this is likely or realistic. The Article demonstrates how critically dependent America is in nearly every imaginable way - on California.

And the point in posting is to educate chicken-littles on how strong this state is in spite of various frustrations and flaws:

BBC - Future - What if California seceded from the US?

Bingo! No way the other states would vote for secession if the issue ever got that far. Many like to throw stones at CA but let us leave to their detriment- no way!

I didn’t read the article, but the topic has popped up here before. Both California and the rest of the us would be worse off if that happened.

True as the link to the USA is a major part of its success. CA is not going to go in the sink anytime. People in the State may, as we see the divide between rich and the Middle class growing.

Things I find very stupid.

1) For any State to want to secede from The U.S.
2) For anyone trying to divide California into 3-4 different states.

Again, the point of the thread isn’t whether California ever will or should secede ... the point is to demonstrate how much the character, evolution, and success of the nation is instrinsically reliant on it’s most dynamic state: California.

All the handwringing and protesting of so many on this forum lamenting the demise of the state overlooks its fundamental supporting position.

No one is going give up his/her US citizenship for a CA citizenship

CA is strong because it is part of America and it has always gotten a lot of federal dollars, R&D for defense, etc. Plus the military bases. The federal lands.

Without the USA backing it up, it would be a Mexico

Ridiculous article.

California, like Hawaii, would be overrun by a world super power without the United States military. California people like to forget just how dependant they are on federal defense.

Um. At this point, America is strong because of California. That’s the gist of the OP article, correctly.

America needs the bases in CA. And federal lands are great but they don’t contribute any significant amount to the economy.

35 countries out of 230 have larger populations. Mexico has 3.5x the population of California. Yet you want to compare the two? Lol. Why not Canada and Australia? Or Germany, France, the United Kingdom? All closer in population, education, economy, technology, culture ... are they weaklings without belonging to the United States?

As for giving up citizenship ... wrong again. Lots of folks wouldn’t consider, but 10’s of millions would in a heartbeat. But again, that’s not the point. The point is the first line of this post in response to yours.

CA would be nothing without America

It's foolish to think otherwise. Granted, it has become more of a two way street, but without the US the state is nada. But you can't separate the two and look at CA in a vacuum without recognition that its existence is totally dependent on the rest of the country. It wouldn't be where it is today without being part of the USA. It is America's child. It's like saying Tom Brady would have been a great QB even if his parents had never given birth to him. These things are intertwined.

Do you really believe people would give up their US citizenship for a CA citizenship when all those protections and military security are lost? That is just wild-eyed thinking right there if you ask me.
