SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco will spend up to $600,000 to paint over historical artwork at a public school depicting the life of George Washington, a mural once seen as educational and innovative but now criticized as racist and degrading for its depiction of black and Native American people.

The "Life of Washington" was painted by Victor Arnautoff, one of the foremost muralists in the San Francisco area during the Depression. The San Francisco School Board's decision to paint over the 83-year-old mural is prompting some to worry that other artwork from the so-called New Deal era could face a similar fate because of changing sensitivities...

So curious about this need to wipe out anything historical. I get that there was (and still is) inequality everywhere and so many people were treated poorly but when you try to cover up what formed this country instead of learning from the mistakes and do better, that's really what matters. They may be able to paint over the mural of Washington, but it will never change the fact that he was the first President of the U.S. Just do better America. smh

Yeah this is one sick society we've been breeding and it's really coming into it's own now. The leftist, socialist sickie druggie crap parented junk educated of today's generation are well on their way to slowly eradicate this country. In some regards glad I'm old enough I won't likely see the end of it. But I'm not enjoying the movement in that direction either. Just too bad I don't have hands on a time machine to turn things back a bit to when civility, intelligence and common sense existed. Based on what I'm seeing the brats brought up in the last 30 years are beyond pathetic assisting this entire change. Just glad I can remember a much better time

How can a painting traumatize someone? If they don't like it, don't look at it.

Yeah let's all have a cow over a non-issue. Typical Fox News making much ado about nothing.

Obliterating history allows for the "new thought" to replace it.

In other words, allows the new gang of thieves and murderers to get away with it.

Yeah like your socialist CNN, ABC, ABC, NBC and others that have nothing better to do but accuse the sitting president of a laundry list of bull$hit accusations. So what's new?

I heard about this a few weeks ago on the local radio. It seems that the school board already made up its mind about removing it. The painting is significant and would seem to be a valuable lesson in history.

Its not Fox News. Its a Fox affiliate's local news. Kind of like Channel 2 in the Bay Area. That said I wouldn't call it much ado about nothing. I read about this controversy in the San Francisco Chronicle about a year ago. It has quite a number of people up in arms. It is a shame that 21st Century political correctness and pandering to special interests will end up destroying an 83 year old mural by a renowned artist.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” ― George Orwell, 1984
