I'm happy to report, that there's a good Chinese restaurant in Arvin.

You're right. Just like most of the city of Los Angeles. A lot of it feels like a third world jungle: graffiti everywhere, cars parked on lawns, diapers in the gutter, dead lawns, cars with those annoying loud cherry bomb mufflers just to be extra noisy, and otherwise low standards.

Not sure what you're attempting to illustrate here, but I see this person as industrious and wouldn't mind seeing more industrious people around anywhere.

Sorry Bert. So, what city in California would YOU choose to put at the top of your list as a fun place?

I know zero about Arvin. What's fun about it (besides good Chinese food) ?

But Crescent City is an interesting suggestion!

Near Baker Beach because they allow dogs off leash

Burney just because I really love Burney Falls State Park, the problem is the town is so small I would probably get bored and move within 6 months

Nevada City just because it's a little weird and full of old hippies
Great list, 2sleepy. Small towns can be fun places to live too -- I know, I live in one. I definitely agree with your nominations of Monterey, Carmel, and Santa Cruz. They'd make my list too.

OK, so far we have votes for the following cities/towns as being fun places to live in California:

San Diego
Laguna Beach
San Francisco
Arvin (?)
Crescent City
Santa Cruz
Carmel
Monterey
Nevada City
Burney
Orange County (can we narrow this down a bit to specific cities?)

I'd also add Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo to the list.

Thanks CA4Now. I also think it would be fun to live in San Francisco.

OK, so far we have votes for the following cities/towns as being fun places to live in California -- I'll put asterisks next to the ones that have been mentioned more than once, and I've highlighted the cities that made the US News & World list of fun places to live in the U.S. in Red as well.

San Diego
Laguna Beach
San Francisco*
Arvin (?)
Crescent City
Fresno
Santa Cruz*
Carmel
Monterey
Nevada City
Burney
Orange County (can we narrow this down a bit to specific cities?)*
Santa Barbara
San Luis Obispo

Anyone else have cities or towns to add to the list of fun places to live in California? Any thoughts on Sacramento? How about Carlsbad or Ferndale?

Tahoe and Yosemite.

We just moved back...and missed Yosemite - esp in fall.

Well I do think there are more fun and interesting places to visit and live in CA than almost anyplace else in America except maybe the DC area but how Fresno or even Sac makes the list is beyond me. Of course they are both close to other fun places so maybe that has something to do with it. Even with all street people living in L.A.. and San Francisco I still can think of so many wonderful sights to see. As for living there, I don't think so.

Right here in the conejo valley we are an hour and a half max from just about any fun thing imaginable, except skiing which is 2 hours. Hiking can be done from the doorstep. 20 minutes to Malibu beaches. Something fun and interesting in every direction, every weekend.
