I'm running out of ideas as to where to buy. I have friends in L.A. that are important to me and family in napa. Been trying to decide which is more important and also looking at moving partway between. Recently posted about lake isablella but replies made me realize it's probably not for me. Bakersfield isn't isolated lijke other areas and has public sewers and plenty or retail and other necessities. But how is it as far as crime and lifestyle in general? Any areas to avoid and others to look for?

All I know is that most people who live there like it. Unlike Fresno/Stockton/Modesto

Why live in between? Is it a cost issue? What's your budget?

Why don't you consider something closer to Sacramento?

Bako is one of the sprawliest parts of California. It's surrounded by foothills and has a river. It's hardcore conservative (near the top for this in CA). It's got a decent downtown and decent access to interesting parts of CA. As a city, I find bako alright

There is One issue with bako that needs a mention. It's the lack of summer breezes in bako. I struggle with the valley heat when there's no wind, but if there's a breeze, I do just fine, even in 100f heat! Living in bako would be tough for me because of that one reason alone.

I'd shoot for Sacramento first before Bakersfield. If you can't do Sacramento , look into Modesto/Madera/Merced/Los banos and even Fresno-clovis before Bakersfield. Bakersfield has good qualities, but I can't deal with the lack of breeze. And before anyone says anything, this year has been a decent year for wind in Bakersfield. Who knows if this will keep up. Hopefully it does! That'd be good news for everyone living in the valley.

This pic is from a spring like weather event that happened yesterday(yes, September wind in the valley). Notice the color differences between bako and other spots. This is an extreme event, but worth showing.

I am extremely familiar with housing prices in all areas of Ca that are within my area i am willing to live and the reason i picked bakersfield is i can afford it. It also allows me to make a bi or tri annual trip to see my family while remaining close enough to my friends in L.A. where i live now that i could go there regularly. Other areas i can afford are rife with low life people, drugs etc, or are too rural. BF has sewers and gas lines and all the retail u could want and is affordable. So the question really concerns quality of life which in large part is dependent on NOT living among the dregs of humanity which seems almost always unavoidable if the area is in my price range with is a max of 200k. Palmdale for example. So BF seems like the only place i have found that might be livable and tick all the boxes that are must haves. Heat i can take, i like heat as long as it's not humid. Seems like there are some areas just on the outskirts near the 178 on the way to isabella that are newer and nice areas in which I occasionally see a home that is a tad over my budget but i could probably swing it if i had to.

Bakersfield seems very nice, from my research. It's my fiance though, he's become obsessed with the area around 29 Palms and Joshua Tree NP. He wants to live in that location badly.

Ok, so the one issue i now worry about is the air pollution from the oil fields. Can anyone tell me how far away you have to get from them to not be affected much oil at all? I found a pretty nice house but it was very close to the oil fields which tells me thats probably why the price was right for what it is.
