Me too. However, I would move in a heartbeat if I could find something similar in Bishop. Alas most of the land there is owned by the Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power and boy, did they ever screw up the Owens Valley. The east slope of the Sierras is breathtaking.

Oh it gets enough love from the people who live there and brag incessantly how awesome it is. Especially the natives who grew up there, claiming it's the best city in the country, if not world.

I think it's a great place to live for a few years, and I'm glad I did when I was younger, but I guess I'd rather just vacation there and live in a much more cosmopolitan area with more of a variety of things to do. To each, his own.

Monterey, definitely. We lived there for over a decade and loved it. Just far enough from the Bay Area to avoid all the crowds and traffic, but close enough to catch a flight out of San Jose. The Big Sur coast is one of the top scenic wonders of the state. Its an amazing place to live.

Most of our relatives are in San Diego. But given the choice, we like Monterey way more.

It usually ranks high on a place people want to move to. Ranked 3rd for out of metro searches for people to move to: https://www.citylab.com/life/2020/01...entals/605371/

SF and LA rank high on cities people want to move to but also rank high on cities people want to leave as well.
