Jay....Welcome to Redding

Yes.. I believe you can find a job here,,,

Look at Craigs list.. look at the Nickel want ad (free and at just about every gas station etc).. try Reddingjobs.com,,, from the Record Searchlight paper

There is the Walmart distribution center in Tehama County.. obviously there is the county and the hospitals (mercy and redding medical center).. they are the biggest employers.. you might even ask around at CalFire,, they may be looking for seasonal drivers

There may be affordable housing in Anderson, City of Shasta Lake and south Redding

There are a number of engineering firms.. don't forget to get a copy of the yellow pages.. Raleys supermarkets usually has copies by the door.

Scales and Chippies are prevalent here ... good luck...

As I understand it the bass are already shaking hearing you are coming!!!!

here is an example of a local job.. the only issue I see is the pay scale here for many people is lower than other areas of California... but hopefully lower rents offset that

Just a quick look at craigs list found these but there are many more and I am posting here as a representation of the area.. I have NO interest in anything posted

Might I suggest, if people are not in a hurry to live in a fancy home, but a new manufactured home in the mountains outside Redding, 15 minute commute, try French Gulch.
There is a manufactured home community. Yes I saw it WAS in a park. But VERY rural.
Pleasent, quiet and clean and nice.
VERY affordable. Check by Googling--->>> shasta the Mulitple Listings and clicking on 'French Gulch'.
Just check these little homes out if you are starting out. At least for awhile, they might do.
Good Luck

hello again
redding is a very nice place to live i have lived here 56 years and it sure is changing from the hillbilly cowtown it was into Quite a unique place to be. the heat of the summer is Wilting i tend to disagree with other posters about getting used to it.
its more like learning to deal with it.
the Numerous lakes in the area provide relief from the heat Whiskeytown Lake has Two Fine Family Orientated Beaches Brandy Creek and Oak Bottom
the winters are generally mild. i have been here a long time and love it more and more everyday. great fishing. if i were you i would rent a place try it out for a while before betting all your marbles that you will like it as much as i do.
i am retired and am not aware of the current employment situation. but i have always found that if you are honest and industrious redding will produce a decent place to live .

we have been looking at redding for years. I am in sales, and cannot seem to find a job yet that will allow me to support a home. I will say the prices are "almost there". So I keep an eye on the local market. Good luck to you.

Whiskeytown Lake is the best place in the world. Then again, I grew up in and around that lake...fond memories. My younger brother works for a dairy distributer in Redding(not sure of the name) and he makes as much as I do here in the city(Sacramento). He makes about $18 an hour, but he gets lots of overtime. My sister's boyfriend's father is an electrical engineer(I think) who owns his own business, but last I heard business was slowing down. Which probably means not many job openings. Your wife can probably find a job in the service sectors until she can find something.

I am jealous...I want to move back soooo bad!

This is definitely a beautiful place to live and raise a family...but my only advice would be to secure a job first, that'll be your toughest obstacle (a good, high paying job, or at least high enough to support your family). Be persistent, once you identify a good job, CALL and talk to someone don't just apply on-line like many job seekers do. Since you've never lived here, I recommend you rent before you buy. Get acquainted with the area first and you'll quickly know what parts of Redding you like best. The West side is popular but if you ask me, it's annoying to go through the downtown area. Too many lights and too many one-ways.

Smile Tough Economy for Engineers

Jay,
I live in the area and regularly work with engineering firms. This is a really tight economic climate for engineering firms-not just in the Redding area, but at least throughout the northstate (CA). Many firms are operating with skeleten crews, trying to wait out the slump in development. Your wife would be hard-pressed to find engineering work here at this time.

You, on the other hand should find plently of opportunity here. This area is about midway between Seattle and LA, so a number of trucking firms have midpoint terminals here. Someone already mentioned the Walmart Distribution Center in Red Bluff. It employs about 1200. Not sure how many truckers though.

Except for my military service, I've lived here all my life (I'm 50). For non-natives, the summers take some getting used to. Late June thru about mid September can be brutally hot. Even a "dry heat" is unbearable when the mercury hits 118 degrees. It's certainly not everybody's cup of tea. Winters are cool and moist. Snow on the valley floor is a rare occurence. Of course the upper elevations get regular winter dustings.

Good luck with your job search and relocation plans.
