Calaveras County has the towns of Murphys, Angels Camp, and Mokelumne Hill, which are all quaint. I don't think you'll ever get to know ALL the folks in those towns, but you can meet your share. I know just about everyone in my town, (it takes me 25 minutes to buy a single item in the store) but that's also part of my job.

If you are looking for 4 seasons of equal time share I'm not sure CA is the right place, Defiantly not SCAL.
The problem with the NCAL regions with 4 seasons is that jobs that pay are fewer and far between. I’ve never seen Gilmore Girls but I’m guessing the town is like Mayberry without the moonshine and accents.
We were looking for the same things also but it’s hard to find and still be close to hospitals, jobs and good schools. You may want to look at http://www.city-data.com/city/Forest...alifornia.html

Have you looked else where in the US there are lots of small towns in OR and WA. One place we loved the look and feel of was Camas WA. The problem was the paper mill smell we could not get past that.

Does Gilmore Girls have tweekers? Because every quaint town in California sure does! Seriously, try Jackson, Auburn or anywhere else in the foothills of Sierra.

We definitely have four seasons here in Siskiyou County. Check out Weed, Mt. Shasta, McCloud, Dunsmuir, Yreka. Not a lot of jobs, and what there are don't pay a lot. Everyone knows everyone. Lots of outdoor activities!

Yep, I'm also in Siskiyou County. True four seasons here in Dunsmuir. The community college (College of the Siskiyous) is 20 miles north. The City of Redding, with plenty of shopping, is 50 miles south. Good paying jobs are not prevalent, but if you have a good work ethic and moderately good communication skills, you should be able to find employment. Yes, there's a meth problem here, the same as in many small communities. Good parental guidance can likely fend off any problems with your own kids.
I moved here three years ago from Los Angeles and am very happy with the change. I don't have children at home, so I don't have that to worry about.

Doesn't mean it isn't beautiful, and it has more "weather" than AZ, but still... not four seasons in the true sense of the phrase. When I think four seasons, I think back East, Midwest, and some of the South.
Anyway, to get close the the four seasons concept, you'll definitely want to stick with Northern CA over Southern. I agree with many other posters too, that area is probably the most likely place to find "quaint."
When I think quaint, I think "get the heck out of CA," but hey, that's just me.

The Sierra's, at least where I am, is high desert mountain. Pine trees and dust. We get winter and summer. Snow in the winter and sun in the summer and very little rain. I don't feel like I'm experiencing fall or spring here but I am og from a much more lush area.
