I wouldn't call it meaningless. I live in one of the cities that's close to the highest on the list and grew up in one of the cities which was the lowest.

In my current community, most of the families are highly educated and in the high-tech sector. Schools are very high performing and we are one of the safest communities in the US. And yes, the cost of living is very high.

The community I grew up was heavily dependent upon agriculture and migrant workers. Schools are not ranked very well and the crime rate is very high, due to gang activity. My parents actually moved away because they didn't feel safe in their older years. Cost of living is lower (for California), but purchasing power is also very low due to the poor job market/income earning potential.

It is really night and day.

How is it meaningless? It correlates to a lot of characteristics of these cities.

It is part of the reason for the divide that is occurring: the shrinking middle class, the increasing poor and the wealthy with more rich from other Countries as well.

What's interesting is that "having a degree" does always correlate with "high household income." For instance, Irvine has more degree-holders than Newport Beach and far more than Mission Viejo or Lake Forest, but lags behind all of them on income. Age probably has quite a bit to do with this.

Agreed. Those that have the skills or education escape the dead end communities. It is why we need to invest in skill development, due to structural unemployment and not pretend that manufacturing jobs are coming back.

I have to disagree on that one. When we lived in Venice, out next door neighbor had a PhD and was driving a taxi. Many communities are full of differently educated people, performing all sorts of different jobs with varying incomes. One of our neighbors has a high school diploma and earns three times his wife's income; she holds an M.A.

Did the husband in that household grow up in/was he socialized within an affluent household in an affluent community/town/city ?
