The-A-Team:

I'll say it again, you need to learn not to make assumptions about people. I have listened to metal (including Death metal) for 20 years. And yet I still think what I stated previously is true. Music can be great and simple. Regardless, you are free to think as you will. I should have not said anything beyond my initial comment.

Ryoku:

Have you looked up the info on SLO on city data? There are a few pictures and a lot of information about the city:

Humanoid, lets agree to disagree, nothing wrong with that. We both assumed things about each other, but for no real reason, its ok just to have our own opinions. I think what I stated is true, just as you think the same about what you stated.

Ryoku, I think both SLO and San Diego would have a lot to offer you, and excel in different areas. Definitely check out the individual boards for local opinions(and photo threads ). Also once you get it narrowed down, a visit is always a good idea if you have the time

I grew up in Morro Bay and now live in Los Osos (Montana De Oro, is next door). Check out the photos of those places, too. You'll get an idea of how beautiful it is here. Living in SLO and walking or biking to work? totally. You can make that happen. No artistic connections? I wouldn't be so quick to assume that. Cal Poly is a great resource. You can probably find common ground there. I'm not quite sure what you are talking about completely? 3d artist? studios? Maybe explain it a little.
DON'T Live or Move to San Luis Obispo - Unless you're very very Wealthy - Topix Read the whole thread. These guys are more intense than the argument between A-Team and Humanoid lol. Anyway, I can't find a forum for Pacific Beach. =[ 3d art pertains to computer generated imagery in programs like 3ds max, Maya, Zbrush, XSI, used in movies and games for vfx, modeling, texturing, animation, etc. Take for example Iron Man. Most of that movie was CG, including the suit. Here's an example of 3d, one of my recently finished works, and a friend of mine's hulk in 3d. Also, visit www.cgosciety.org (broken link) One of the biggest online communities for 3d and 2d artist. A studio is a company like CafeFX, who is hired on a contract to do the CGI for a movie, or cinematics for a game. ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) is one of the biggest companies, and have worked on many movies including the Star Wars movies, and Iron Man. However, they also do miniatures, bigatures, mocap (motion capture), and many other techniques used in movies. Weta Workshop and weta digital is another genius bunch of artist. They did all the work for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

That's neat stuff. I was told once that CafeFX was based out of Santa Maria, which is about 20-25 minutes south of SLO. Maybe there are still there? SLO is expensive, but I don't think you are planning on buying a house. It's cheaper than San Diego, I'm sure of that.If you move out during the summer, when the students leave,I'm sure you'll find a reasonable priced rental. you may need roomates? I don't know. CA is a big state, maybe you need to scout around. Take a look at all these places.

Thx. =] I've had a busy past 2 days. CafeFX is located in Santa Maria, yea. I looked up a few apartments around PB and PL. SLO seems to have to similarly priced apartments, perhaps a little cheaper. Thing is, for alot of the apartments, running around 1500 for 2 bedroom, I'd like to find a third person to room with me and my friend, so we can knock down the rent to 500 each. Would be soo much better. I never atually had an apartment before so, do we have to meet with the landlords or tenants in-person before being accepted? Also, when is the best time to purchase tickets, etc. Maybe you can help me with any need-to-know things I may forget.

Man, I don't know. I went from living with my parents, to living with my wife, to buying a house. I never played musical rentals and roomates. First and only landlord I ever had was a friend of mine. I'm not much help there. I have a friend who works athe airport in SLO, I'll ask him about the tickets.

Hey, sorry to bump the thread. Just wanted to know if you guys can give me any more advice/opinions on PB, and I'd like to know if Clairemont is a good area? One of the main reasons PB appeals to me is because it has 150 restaurants, and many bars and other job opportunities. Also, is it possible that I could do some modeling for extra money? Would I have to get together a portfolio and contact a agency when I get there? What's the best time to purchase plane tickets? And can anybody else answer my apartment rent question? Btw, I really appreciate all the input CA central coast. =} I really want to keep this thread active until I'm ready to move, and even after that.

What do you guys also think about cities in OC? There seems to be some lower cost rent for some nice apartments in Huntington Beach. It's population is around 200k, and can anybody give me any opinions on there, and if work is alright? Also, is walking to work, restaurants or not, easy? Perhaps if we lived in downtown.

Huntington Beach and PB is the way to go. Plenty of Beutiful Beach, Beer, Boobs, Booty.. you get the idea. Not sure how big or if there is even a modeling industry down there but you will sure have fun. PB has more job opportunities with its abundance of bars, pubs, restaurants, down Garnet Av. PB is also more of a college town than bedroom community HB. Lots of college babes from UCSD in La Jolla and SDSU call PB home. Palm trees, Tanned babes, and golden sand beaches u cant go wrong. Cant wait to drive down there for this Memorial Day weekend.

I currently live in the Calabasas area of the San Fernando Valley. While parts of the Valley offer s many career oppurnities in many industris such as Entertainment (Burbank: NBC, UNiversal, Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Dream Works), Adult Ent. (Chatsworth/Van Nuys-Vivid Ent.) Medical/Cosmetic/Plastic (Encino), Insurance (Warner Center-Blue Cross, Blue Shield, 21st Century, AIG are either headquartered or have major operations) it is extremely hot during summer and other parts of it are infamous for its gangs, drugs and poverty. The Studio City and Sherman Oaks area (along Venture Blvd) has many restaurants and bars you can potentially work at. The southern part of the Valley (Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino Hills, Tarzana, Calabasas) is also home to many celebrities. California State University, Northridge is in Northridge and has a pretty good business program you can attend once you obtain residency ($3,500 yr tuition). Hollywood and the Westside is over the hill in case you need to model for extra cash.

PB- If you want to have fun and meet tons of people our age.
SFV- If you are serious and want a career while still having fun. Fun is a 20 min ride to Hollywood, Sunset, Santa Monica)

Thanks very much for the reply valleyboy! =] Well I'm not too serious about my career at the moment (as in going straight for a job), first I want to develop my artistic skills on my own, and perhaps with the aid of other local artist. Perhaps attend some college courses. One reason I'm not going to a art/animation school is because of the price. Whether it's SVA in New York City, Ringling School of Art and Design in Florida, CalArts in Valencia, or VFS in Vancouver, tuitions run around 30-40k a year. And as good of a experience that might be, such a high cost intimidates me. Then I'll look for a job or internship, which would best be served in a city like LA, where the CG industry is thriving. The more I hear about PB, the more excited I get about making that my destination. So you're going down for memorial day? It would be awesome if you could grab some photos, I'd like to take a look at the area from your point of view. Also, anything you can find out about apartment locations and any other useful info. Can't wait!
