In the face of the extreme learning loss in the last half of the 2019-2020 and the first half of the 2020-2021 school years, it's clear that a massive amount of make-up needs to be done, especially in Math. As opposed to our state government's track record of reactionary COVID school measures taken with just a few days/weeks notice to educators and parents, we need to start planning to make up this learning loss now, not in May.

With projections of re-openings of most secondary schools (and hopefully a return to full-time schooling for primary schools) in April, and the effective end to the pandemic at the beginning of summer, the California government, school administrators, teachers, and parents need to start planning for summer sessions. As time goes on and additional assessments of learning shortfalls are made, we will all likely need to plan for shortened breaks/recesses, and possibly year-round schooling in order to recover from the effects of the pandemic in the subsequent regular school years.

Is the pandemic really ending in the summer? I've heard 2022 and beyond.

Masks and vaccines and all that, sure. I didn't say COVID is ever going to be gone. I'm talking about the resumption of regular schooling now that infection rates are falling to background levels. Our local school district is returning to class in April, and they're going to be dealing with a lot of kids who have learned next-to-nothing during the past year, especially in the lower grades and especially with children whose parents didn't have the ability to make up for all the education the schools failed to deliver.

Ah, I'm in PA and we are nowhere near opening anything. Good luck!

Ours has been open since November but we can do it easier than in PA. For example, our school lacks hallways. Each classroom leaves the door and windows open all day. The kids eat outside. Probably can't do that in a cold climate.

Sounds good to me if the teachers are willing and able.

Open to what extent? I'm just curious. I don't pay much attention outside of my own.

As for learning loss and equity, these are the reality for poorer communities in any calendar year, not just this unprecedented pandemic. I almost see a silver lining here in that covid maybe raised awareness that these things are real now that they've affected everyone.

I heard about this "new" math. Where 2+2=5.

Yeah, I'm gonna want that person doing my taxes in 15 years....
