Default Where should I live in California for a year doing clinical research?

Hi, I was hoping to get some suggestions/advice about where to live in California for a year. I will be restricted by having to be near an academic hospital so I can do clinical research but other than that the major cities (LA, SF, SD...) are all attractive. I love the sun, beaches, outdoor sports, culture, nightlife, pretty generic stuff but I try to take advantage of everything. I don't want much of a commute, other than walking or biking distance. I'll be spending time doing volunteer work in the community with teaching but I can do that anywhere. I have been living in Baltimore for a couple years now. Thanks for your help.

San Fran has some of the finest research/teaching hospitals in the world. Saved my daughters life once! San Fran would be a great place to spend a year. A lttle pricey but beautiful scenery. Good luck!

They saved my dad too. Still makes me emotional.

In fact, that's how I met my partner, he's a Cardiologist at UCSF. Anyway, 2 wonderful things happened to me there so I love the place.
