SACRAMENTO — The rules governing recall elections in California will be subject to new scrutiny and possible changes, as two state legislators said Wednesday that the failed effort to remove Gov. Gavin Newsom from office was too costly and needlessly confusing.

Though election returns remained incomplete following Tuesday’s contest, recall supporters found their effort millions of votes short with projections that Newsom easily won enough support to complete the final year of his current term. California lawmakers agreed to spend at least $276 million in the most recent state budget to cover the costs of the recall, but some elections officials have estimated the final tab will be closer to $300 million.

“That money could be spent on housing, on homelessness, on combating climate change, forest fires, early childhood education, you name it,” said Assemblyman Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park), chairman of the Assembly Elections Committee. “There’s a lot of desire, and need, for reforming the recall process.”

That's ironic because they could also spend their time trying to tackle those issues instead of constantly trying to change the recall process to favor them.

The Democratic lawmakers were asked whether their upcoming hearings would include a discussion of the way that election administration rules have been written and rewritten affecting the timing of recall elections. Democrats pushed through a change in 2017 to slow down the recall election timeline in hopes of helping state Sen. Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) avoid removal. The effort didn’t save Newman, who was removed in 2018 but then reclaimed his Senate seat last year.

Democrats push for changes to California recall efforts

There is little benefit for Democrats in pushing changes that could anger voters, said Joshua Spivak, an expert on recalls and senior fellow at the Hugh L. Carey Institute for Government Reform in New York.

“From a political point of view, it’s kind of crazy, and I can’t imagine why they would spend political capital on this,” Spivak said. “Are you going to go to the voters and say, ‘Well, we didn’t deal with the homeless problem but yeah, we fixed the recall?’ It just doesn’t seem like a smart move.”

Sadly that answer is Yes and most voters will be okay with it. This is CA after all.

The cost of the recall will exceed 300 million dollars. That's a lot of money spent to let some right wingers from the "State of Jefferson" to make fools of themselves with their recall. That money could have been spent on far more important issues, like improving the education of children in the "State of Jefferson" so they won't grow up to be as stupid as their parents.

It's bizarre how much you care about the cost of an election yet say nothing, an actually make excuses for, all the fraud and waste in our state govt. You care more about the cost of doing an election that you do the $200 million than was meant for the blind, deaf, and poor missing from the CPUC. It's pretty disturbing and sick what enrages Newsom's bootlickers versus what they constantly shrug off. Republicans provide a great distraction as they fleece state taxpayers everyday.

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it, just like I'm entitled to mine

It's not really an opinion actually because you have literally shown zero concern for all the unemployment fraud and have actually made excuses for it. And have said NOTHING about the missing CPUC money. That's a fact. Yet you have bellyached about the cost of an election probably at least 50 times by now.

This should surprise nobody, apparently Newsom knows what's best for you and now has the "moral authority":

Gavin Newsom signals more COVID-19 mandates could come after California recall

"[The recall election occurred] in no small degree because of our approach to the pandemic, so what I'm saying here is, be affirmative," Newsom said. "Don't be timid. Lean in. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about formal authority of setting the tone and tenor on masks — on vaccines and masks. But it's the moral authority that we have: that we're on the right side of history and we're doing the right thing to save people's lives."

Did you ever watch the Marlon Brando movie "The Wild one", an old movie about a motorcycle gang? A line from that movie is stuck in my head: “What are you rebelling against?” the leader of the motorcycle gang (played by Marlon Brando) is asked) he replies: “Whaddaya got?” .
