Default Get the Paper for a Year before you Move...wish I had

I pay a monthly fee to have access to the New York times so I can avoid the Bakersfield paper.

Wow. I lived somewhere I hated for 2 1/2 years, and I did the same thing. I subscribed to the L.A. times just to keep in the loop of normal life. You know, I learned something from that experience. The newspaper of the area is most definitely a big huge hint as to the pulse of the people in the area. In the local paper where I lived, there was always an underlying "sacrcasm" in some of the local reporter's columns. A lot of reverse discrimination, a hint of defensiveness, complacency, and irritation about the local college "rich" kids, and the new wave of "rich" retirees moving in. After enough time, I really got sick of the negativism. We called it the "Anti" effect. I finally cancelled my subscription and got the Times. Then I moved as soon as I could. I'm much happier now.

Default City Mottos.....

]"Bakersfield - it's not as bad as you've heard."
I've always thought that should be the city's motto.

That's really good!

Better than.....................

"Montana - where Men are Men and Sheep are Scared"

Bakersfield heads the country in most reported Incest. And on another show I watched renently I was informed that in the Kinsey Report of the 50's it was documented that 40% of the young men interviewed for that report who lived in a rural area had engaged in sex with their animals.

Answer your question?
I still want to see where you dreamed that one up. I wasn't offended, I just don't believe it and it wouldn't matter what city we were talking about.

I have lived here for 22 years and then 12 years in Kingsburg which is about 20 miles South of Fresno. I have no problem with Bakersfield or Fresno but I have come to hate the Central Valley. I am tired of the fog, heat, and immigration growth. Of course I loved the Valley in my younger days but now as I have matured a little I am longing for clean air and small town living. lol. Bakersfield is a good ole boy town. We are extremely patriotic. For a big city most people I have come across are concervative Republican's which I am. The people of this town take care of their own. I have seen the whole city come together when a child needs medical help. Most of us come from a mixed okie background. Beans, fried potatoes, and cornbread. YUM!!!! We love our Country music. Go Buck!!!! There are problems here and we all know what they are but for a big city we are a close nit family.

Now about Fresno. I grew up in Kingsburg and only ventured to Fresno to go shopping for school clothes. We camped every year at Shaver Lake. Oh to be a child again. The Fresno are has grown so much and changed so much but I still consider the area home. The Central Valley will always be home for me. Shaver Lake, Bass lake, Yosemite are all within a short drive from the Fresno area. Doesn't matter whether it is a straight shot or you veer left. It all within a short drive. Absolutley beautiful. The central valley is ugly. lol. But the mountain areas surrounding it are wonderful.

This is all my opinion. Long live the Dalians!!!!!!!
I'm just the opposite! I moved from Bakersfield in 1970 when I was 13 years old, to Tulsa Oklahoma. You wannt talk culture shock? Everything, including music, was about 2 years behind the times. It eventually caught up to the rest of the states, but I much preferred Oklahoma over Bakersfield.

Here's something funny. I now live in rural Wyoming, about 5 miles outside of Casper. One of my new neighbors built a house 1 mile from me to summer in, they are snowbirds and go to ARizona when the weather changes. Well, he grew up in Bakersfield too. He is 14 years my senior, but at least he knew all the places I grew up with.

Young married, asian couple looking to move to Bakersfield from Philadelphia, due to job opportunity in health care.
1) Are there any asian grocery markets?
2) Korean/Japanese restaurants?
3) I see that rent is very cheap compared to other areas of California...which apt complexes are in the nicer area?
4) We're used to walking everywhere in Philly...do we need a car to get around?
5) It's about 2 hrs to LA...but with traffic does it take longer?
6) How much is sales tax in California?
7) Is there a large asian community?
8) Never experienced earthquakes...is it bad?
9) Are there large shopping centers? Or are they just spread out? I'm assuming the usuals, like target, costcos, best buy, etc.
10) Did some research...there's no In N Out burgers...where's the closest one?

Any feedback would be great!

I think Bakersfield gets a bad rap all the time. Personally, I'd like to keep that myth alive as it cuts down on traffic, nasty people "visiting" and makes my experiences there more pleasant. Please, when it comes to Bakersfield, I'd encourage the majority to just keep on driving thru. Nothing to see there, folks!

Seriously... if your criteria for a town is, "Where's the closest fast food place", you may want to reevaluate your priorities.

No offense... but after all, you are the one who listed it in your Top 10.
