Default HELP ASAP!! Where to live near Long Beach, CA

I am in desperate need of your inside help! I just received a job offer in Long Beach and I have heard of the crime issues there. I am a single young (20s) female moving from Atlanta, GA and I need some suggestions on a safe place to live. I want to spend ~1,000 on rent and I DON"T want to live in the ghetto! I have been looking and I found a place in Newport Beach South. Is this commute reasonable? Here in ATL, the average commute is 45min. Also, is LBC a complete dump? Atlanta is in the top rankings for crime, but I went to GA St in the heart of downtown and have never seen anything horrendous.

Please HELP

NB is very far in traffic.

You're going to want to live where you work because traffic here is second to none when it comes to unpredictability and frustration.

Look in downtown Long Beach, Belmont Shore(part of LB), Naples(part of LB), near Long Beach State and Long Beach City College[eastern campus](the college areas are your best bet honestly), Signal Hill, California Heights(part of LB), Lakewood(east of Lakewood Blvd), Cypress(best bet near Cypress College), & Los Alamitos(though its mostly 2bd apts in the 1200+ range)

Long Beach is mostly safe with some bad areas and gets a bad rap for whatever reason. I would fly out and look before moving and my first place to look for a 1bed in that range would be near the colleges.

Go to the Los Angeles Forum - there are several, many threads about Long Beach (mostly good, I will add).
