Default Is Atwater Nice?

Hello, I am contemplating moving to Atwater, CA, as the home prices are very low. Can anyone who lives there or has experience in the area offer any insight? I noticed a canal runs through Atwater, I googled to see flood history but could not find anything. Please help! Paranoid first time home buyer - thanks!

I have family in Merced. I've spent a lot of time there, and a little time in Atwater. No, Atwater is not "nice." It went downhill after they closed Castle Air force Base. I'm not sure if it has come back to life, or if UC Merced has had any effect on it.

Thumbs up Atwater is nice

I totally disagree with rkb0305 who has "spent a little time" in Atwater. I have lived in Atwater, CA for the past 3 years and I would rather live here than in Merced, that's for sure. Atwater did have a bit of a slump when the air force base closed in 1995 (13 years ago - I think we've recovered by now!). I would seriously consider moving here - the housing costs are better than most places in the central valley. The new SuperTarget is getting ready to open this summer and Atwater is really growing. I highly recommend it.

Talking Do It!

I've lived in Atwater my whole life and i'ts a really nice town. I wouldn't like to find anywhere else to live and I know someday I would also like to buy a home here. It's a small town thats growing and it's good to be a part of that.
