Smile gay friendly cities in California

I think pretty much anywhere in California is gay friendly, but I would AVOID:

Orange County (except Laguna Beach)
Fresno
Central Valley
Compton
Torrance
Hawthorne

how bout jobs, will you be working or are you retired? what do you mean by not expensive? Like many have suggested, Humbolt county might be a good place to check out.

Fresno is somewhere in the middle politically, not necessarily a place to avoid. It is a very diverse city not just in ethnicity but also on many issues. But it is a midsized city, not a small town.

Fresno has one of the oldest GLBT film festivals in the country, 20 years and growing.

No, there are many places in CA that are NOT gay friendly. Pretty much any place that voted down gay marriage and that would include many small towns. Stick to the Coastal counties and stay away from the rest.

Most of the Coastal counties south of Monterey voted yes on Prop8. So that is not necessarily the best gauge of individual cities or towns. To use that as a measure means people need to look closer down at a city or neighborhood level not just counties.

San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego all went Yes. Only Santa Barbara County voted No and even then it was only a 53% No.

I understand the highest per-capita gay populations are in San Francisco and Oakland. We live in San Jose and don't feel at all unwelcome here.

I imagine that is true, but I think the OP was asking about inexpensive areas and certainly San Jose isn't inexpensive. Of course we don't know what he considers inexpensive..

Since you asked for a small town, I'd say Arcata/Eureka/Mckinleyville area, Mt Shasta City, or Chico. All of them are very inexpensive for California and tend not to define people by their sexual lives. Chico has a hot dry climate, Arcata is rainy and cool, Mt Shasta is in between.

Guerneville is perfect, but if that is too expensive try anywhere else in Sonoma County. Valley and foothill towns- not as GLfriendly by enlarge. You don't like Seattle? Never been there, but looks beautiful and fabulous to me!
