Santa Cruz has been smoky/hazy (not too bad though) again these last few days .... from the Big Sur fire and the Indian fire (although it [Indian fire] is apparently contained but still burning?).

How do you guys feel about being outside in all this? When it first started happening I didn't let my kids outside for a week. Now if I do this all summer it will totally ruin their break. They are at swim lessons right now and we did go out on the boat last night for a couple hours, but I still worry about the effect of the bad air on them.

Look at it like this. I smoked cigarettes for 14 years and I quit about a year ago. My doc says that since I am still in my 20's my lungs should make a complete recovery within a couple of years. No black lungs for me after that! So I think a week or two of being in the smoky dirty air can't be more harmful than smoking a pack a day for a decade. I think they will be fine. It's mostly dangerous to elderly people who already have ailments.

Hopefully this will settle your air fears a little, we in MT go through this just about every summer, we've had smoke so bad you can't see down the highway or see across the street. Usually we have the number one forest fire in the nation by now burning tens of thousands of acres. We all still go outside we just slow down on the heavy excersize. Our swim team still went on unless it was real, real bad like heavy ash floating in the air, then they'd just break up early.
Unless you have a resperatory affliction it should be ok and as for kids, it's for such a short time in their lives I don't see where it'll do damage. It's like camping and being around campfires for an extended time. I guess we could be totally paranoid and keep them in but they'd never get outdoors if we did that.
The other thing about staying inside is since it's hot out most turn on their A/C which sucks in outside air so unless you have a hepa filter on your A/C or choose to roast in your house you're not really getting away from it.
Hope it gets under control for y'all soon!

Thanks for the advice and well wishes. I was under the impression that it was what was burning that would affect your lungs. Organic matter vs fuel or chemicals. I'm just not sure at this point what is burning out here. Another fire must have started up, visablility is WAY down today, the sun is a scary orange, you can look right into it. The AC bill will be outrageous.

there haven't been any significant new fires in CA, the changing wind patterns deliver the smoke all over the place. Last Night in Angels Camp the smoke was pretty intense for a few hours, the wind shifted a bit and today it isn't as bad.
Vegetation fires are just that. You really would be better off to stop worrying about smoke. JimJ gave you great advice.

We have a new fire out here, fairly close by. I don't know how "significant" it is to everyone in other areas, but we are totally smothered by the smoke from it here. There hasn't been any news coverage on it yet.
