While I am definitely not obsessed with CA, I do think it is an absolutely gorgeous state and would love to visit there someday. I am pleased to know when I am out there most will not have preconceived notions about me the minute they find out I am a southerner.

That's a very gracious statement and I respect you for it.
And OMG you haven't visited California? Honestly, I'm a native, and I can't wait to move some place quiet and peaceful to retire, but there's some fantastically great places to vacation in California. Although some prefer the cities and amusement parks and shopping, I prefer the natural wonders: Yosemite Valley, Big Sur, Death Valley, Joshua Tree NP, the High Sierras, beaches up and down the entire coast, Catalina Island. Come on out and I'm sure you'll have a good time, and if you like it then move here!
I'll be coming back myself after I move, for vacations and to visit friends.

Thanks. I have always wanted to go but, for various reasons, never got the chance. CA is one of the top places I want to visit. I am astounded by the beauty of the state. I do not think I can afford to live there though.

Interesting topic. I'm originally from Alabama but have lived for the last seven years in LA. It is very interesting because when I moved to LA I felt I was very open to whatever I found, but I found so many people here already had negative perceptions about me because I'm a Southerner. Not that it matters, but I have two college degrees, a high level corporate job and am hardly a "redneck". Of course I am just speaking from my own experiences and not everyone I have met is this way. I've given up on trying to inform those that do have the negative perceptions. I was even told by a daughter of a Beverly Hill's doctor, "I KNOW Middle America!" Okay, whatever. At the end of the day, you have to laugh it off. I am definitely considering moving "back East" in the next couple of years or so though. Miss those green trees and blue skies!

california should be its own country.

And most of us Southerners wish you were your own country!
