The air police were discussing banning wood fires 20 years ago and looks like Chico finally did away with wood. I can't say I blame them having lived up in the pines and having that first whiff of beautiful dry wood only to have some moron start throwing tires on the fire and choking us to death.

I cough my head off and hack up phlegm every time the air gets still in the winter in Oroville. Been doing it all morning today. In my part of town I'd guess about half the homes burn wood regularly. I hate on a 55-60 degree day not being able to open up my windows while cleaning because neighbors feel they're going to freeze to death without a smoldering fire in the wood stove.

I'm envious of the no-burn days in Chico when the winter inversions happen. Too bad Oroville isn't as forward thinking about the health of their citizens. Fine particulates from wood smoke lodge in your lungs and NEVER are expelled.

Depends on the Air District.

In Butte County, there's a voluntary advisory for the county. The City of Chico has a mandatory ban if the county district calls an advisory (2-10 times a winter, depending on the weather).

Wherever you have no natural gas line going to the city it's pretty hard to ban daily wood burning... one other option would be diesel/oil (ewww! leaking tanks!) or expensive propane.

That's not the issue here. The east foothills - yes, but not in town.
