Has Anyone Moved To California Lately??
What was your experience? Where are the cheapest apartments located at?
I'm not saying I want to move there now, but I've been thinking about it for sometime and I'm not sure if my husband wants to or not (I haven't asked him yet). But I'm getting used to the west coast and really would like to stay here. I just want to be closer to the beach (I live about 6 hours from the California border!!!). Any good suggestions??

Besides living nearer to the beach, why do you want to move to California?
What line of work are you (two) in?
What is your budget for rent? Housing price range?
Kids? Ages?

We just moved to California. My husband did a job search, we researched salaries, and then determined whether we could live here on what he could make. If you haven't done this yet, that should be your first step.
Where in California are you interested in living? It's a big state (as you know). Probably if you name a specific area you can get more specific information as to cost-of-living.

Maybe around San Diego. I have relatives there and used to go there every summer, with my parents, to visit them. They lived about 20 minutes from the beach. That would be nice...
Anywhere in southern California. I was a former secretary/receptionist. So something like that or maybe get back into a nightclub cocktail waitressing job (I've done that too before).
And no, I have no kids, so I come and go as I please. Right now the house I live in we are renting for $760...Something like that is okay with me, but not a house, an apartment (because it's just the 2 of us and we really don't need a lot of rooms. Possibly more like a 2 bedroom type apartment).

$760/mo? In San Diego? You're kidding, right? You're going to need to double that.

Or triple that ....
I'd suggest the Central Coast, but you can't find houses for that price.

$760/month for a 2BR is pretty much unheard of anywhere near the coast. I live in a studio apartment in the Bay Area and pay $850 (older building, cute, but no amenities whatsoever). And believe me when I tell you that is below average for what you'd pay for a studio in the Bay Area.
You might earn more as a receptionist or a waitress here than you would wherever you live....but in general, the higher wages do not make up for the higher cost of living here.

A buddy of mine lived in San Diego for a while in a one bed/living room/bath/kitchen...it was pretty big, and he only paid $800 a month ( I know this because I was his roommate for a month.) Anyways, this was on the other side of the highway (21st st. +) and it is pretty much right next to downtown, but it was not really that bad (as I had lived in downtown SD and it really is not as "downtown" as other cities, it feels very safe.) It is entirely possible to find something, but it will be hard and may not be in a small beachside town if that is what you are looking for.

You can't get a 2bdr in Denver for 760, unless it's in the hood! But you can get a nice mountain view two bedroom for about $900. I've seen good deals on the internet, but research is the name of the game...a lot of it.

As to the original question, not if they're smart! Unless, of course, your employer is insisting on it.
