Having lived in fire country and the losses. Everything is replaceable, lives are not. Insure well and then make sure you make preparations for pets and livestock. Keep a clear fire break around the home at all times
I have a large fire safe, they are well made and designed to survive and protect. Very heavy, mine weighs 1400 pounds. I tried buying from Sportsman years ago, came with cash in hand and the truck. Salesman wanted to give me a tour, fine. So after the tour I tell him I want to purchase today and he walks away. They may be nicer today, I bought elsewhere. Shop online for the best price, be aware that delivery charges usually is only to curbside.

Underground bunkers are great for storage during fires ( but not for people without elaborate environmental systems).. they are commonplace in hurricane alley states.. but the delivery and install can get expensive...

You can google storm cellars or hurricane shelters and you will find many companies that make them,, steel,, plastic.. simple to elaborate

DMenscha sounds well informed and prepared... ( I would expect nothing less of a CALFIRE person,,:-)

It took a camp crew three months to go through my place..a tree count.. removing all standing dead and dying (which ended up being about 10 percent of the total count) and a cat cutting a 30 foot fire road around the entire property... and 4000 bucks for a hydrant (thank god I have municipal water) and 900 feet of 1 1/2 Wjax.... and a foam machine... and last year we bought a type 5 wildland engine which I keep ready to go in my shop...

And lastly.. a fire safe plan to evacuate..

If you live in fire country.. you get used to it

I'm Sooooooo jealous of your Type 5. Looks like an oldie but a goodie. I've been looking for an old but serviceable 3000 gal water tender to park in my yard.

theres a nice late model one on ebay right now.. at 10k.. but its like new intl.. and only a couple of years old

I searched for several years for it... came out of rural midwest small fire district.... 21k original miles....it was near mint...not a spec of rust....it even has had only 2 operators in its entire history... all Ive done to it is put a seat in it as the result of fat firemen ... :-).... $3500.00... and it cost me another $3500.00 to flatbed it here... it came fully equipped right down to pulaskis,,,pondoasas, several thousand feet of hose, pond draft, flotopump...winco generator, scene lighting, cribbing, a portable monitor,a couple of hundred gallons of foam,... even BLS bags... everything.. they just took it out of service and put it on the truck for shipping. Its period correct right down to the indian pumps and motorola low band radio...

Its a 4 x 4,,, ship through from ford,, fmc,, special ordered, 361 ci , 5 speed...

when the fire comes and we have to evacuate I hook up the engine... leave the keys in it.. charge the lines..spray some foam.. and let the pros do their thing ( my fire station loves coming to my place because of the engine)... and its a blast to drive... but hard to pump and roll with my skinny wife trying to pull line!!!!!

Dont be jealous.. ok.. maybe a little.. just to tease a fireman

We have a used airport firetruck sitting on a car lot up here right now. Roof mounted remote controlled nozzle(s), 4 wheel drive and I'm guessing set up for water or foam. I think that'd be pretty good as a defense truck due to the remote controlled nozzles and foam capabilities.... There are also a few used pumpers floating around the valley right now.

Ian Pullar is on a distinguished road
Default Comprehensive Bunker Article

I have written a comprehensive 59 page article on fire bunkers. It’s in Microsoft Word format.

It can be found at:
http://home.iprimus.com.au/ianpullar/firebunkers.htm

Links to most Australian fire bunkers suppliers. You can get lot of ideas.

Stuff on design, location, signage etc etc.

See also the following supplier - Wildfire Safety Bunkers – many aspects similar to what I’ve written in my document. Well worth a look.
Wildfire Safety Bunkers I Fire Bunkers Victoria - Australia

In Victoria Australia we have a government investigation going on about the results of the Black Saturday fires in Feb 2009.

Some people died in bunkers but the details have not as yet been made public. See:
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...,00.html]Black

If you can’t download my document, your choices are: get a friend to and them get them to send it to you; or send me an email. I’ll spell my email address out long-hand so I don’t get automated spam!
