Southernbel,
I see this is your first post here and you seem a little overwelmed. Is there a chance for you to visit first before making the leap? This might really help you the most.
As you can see you are getting a wide range of opinions here. And everyone has their biases and preferences 'especially' in CA. I live in CO now but I am a CA native and am strongly opinionated about my home state for better or worse.
That is why I highly suggest you take a little visit or trial run first to check things out. And if you don't like Bakersfield there are many other very nice parts of the state that are not far off from there. If you come all the way out to CA you may as well head to the coast and check out the communities there as well - my personal favorites.
Take care and enjoy your adventure out west.
- Derek

Thank you all for your comments, I'm a little worried about all the bad things i have heard about Bakersfield.I'm moving there at the end of next month. I'm going to try to make the best of it and look at this move as an adventure! It should be exciting and I can't wait!! I can always look on the lighter side of any thing! Thanks Again!!

Bakersfield and SF are worlds apart. Liking one would definitely not mean you'd like the other. Of course, it doesn't mean you won't like it, either.
Best of luck to you.

Maybe I'm not understanding clearly. You've decided to move to Bakersfield but you've never been here? Why are you moving? What made you choose Bakersfield if you don't already have a job lined up?
San Francisco and Bakersfield are totally different worlds. There is no comparison between the two places.

Bakersfield is NOTHING like San Francisco. You might as well be visiting another planet. California is a large and diverse state. We have tropical beaches, snow capped mountains, lush valleys, deserts, just about every possible micro climate you can imagine.
Bakersfield is hot(110 regularly), dry and dusty. Farm community with lots of illegal immigrants(sorry if that offends anyone, but the truth hurts). Middle of nowhere. You'll have to drive 3 hours to LA(I have a negative opinion towards LA too...a suburban sprawl nightmare). Out of all the choices to live in California, Bakersfield would rank only above Los Angeles, Death Valley/Desert areas, and the Mexican border.
Good luck though! Hate to bring you down, but try not to be too shell shocked when you get there!

Bakersfield averages 38 days a year over 100 degrees. As a comparison Phoenix is over 100 degrees on an average of about 90 days per year.
Yes Bakersfield does see over 110 but not regularly.
