I said Bakersfield is not Kern County...it is in Kern County, but it does not represent the entire county. Kern County is massive.

The record for most days over 100 degrees was in 1939 when it was 67 days. Warming still hasn't changed that record.

I can't imagine surviving back then without air conditioning.

You were the one who called Bakersfield a farm community not me. Now you are saying it is not an agricultural town.

You are a smart***. A smug one at that! What is the average 100 degree days from 1990 to now, compared to the average pre 1990? Don't just throw out stats that support your arguement...come home with the bacon!

Bakersfield is still a hole...I've been there, and it is anything but a bustling metropolis like Atlanta. Farm community, yes. maybe not occupation wise, but it IS a farming community. 15% only counts the legal citizens...if you added illegal immigrants the percentage would skyrocket. But you do not seem like the kind of person to admit fault with anything, so you win and I am wrong.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk in response to your fact finding mission, but witty sarcasm never seems to make it across the etherworld to the other end(it only ends up coming off as me being an a-hole, so sorry for that). So instead, let me say thank you for the stats and we shall agree to disagree on the "hottness" of central California.

I have heard these debates before... The bottom line for the poster however is that Bakersfield is definately two things:

1. Different things to different people - What is an armpit town to one man is shangrila to another. Personally I prefer cooler temp areas along the coast. And the diversity of landscape along the N. Cal. coast specifically. But to each his own.

2. Bakersfield is not like SF at all. They are worlds apart in terms of climate, geography, cultural makeup, economy, job opporunities and of course the cost of living.

So if you end up 'hating it' just talk your husband into moving toward SF and the N. Cal. Coast. You can start your 'Negotiating' now! My wife is pretty good at that.
If X then Y. Men are pretty good for the most part when you make it simple like that.

I live in Bakersfield and although you are allowed your opinion unless you live here you should not come in and bash the city, we are not dirt farmers and hispanic workers live all over CA and the rest of the USA and they are people.
It's really pathetic when people jump into these threads and start bashing something that they know very little of.

I wasn't bashing, but when you say there "are hispanic workers all over the state" just tells me that I was right. Which I already knew. hispanic workers are not here legally, but I just recently read that we are not allowed to discuss this topic on these threads so I am not going to go down that road anymore.

I am sorry for pooping all over your town, that was wrong and I admit my wrong here. Please accept my sincere apology. The post just above yours basically said what I was trying to say, but said it in a way that will not come off as disrespectful or arrogant. Please substitute all my worthless ramblings in this thread and replace it with MTNSURFER's post just above mine.

The poster in the thread at this link reported back after their first month in Bakersfield. So far they are enjoying it. Check their post at the bottom of the page.

I just wanted to add -- I haven't really been to Bakersfield other than drive through and my knowledge of Bakersfield is pretty limited to what I hear and what I know of the climate of the area.

However, I did recently sit next to a family on a flight from Atlanta to LAX who were flying home to Bakersfield after a church trip to Israel. I have to say they were very nice people, and the older high school aged girls seemed very smart, respectful and social. The one next to me was doing her homework.

Anyway, I have to say, if Bakersfield had a lot of those types of people, I'd be happy to live there (but for the heat). But of course that's my personal taste, not for every one I understand.

Anyway, just sayin', met some really nice people from Bakersfield.
