I'd go for Healdsburg. Sorry you didn't like Sebastopol. It was one of my favorite places in Sonoma County. Love that Screamin' Mimi's ice cream! And the farmer's market was great, too.

Have you thought about Petaluma? Or is that too bedroom community for you? Mendocino? Gualala? Both are way out there, but absolutely beautiful.

I have stayed in both towns for extended periods of time and probably for a family would choose healdsburg. Although smaller its felt less touristy and fewer daytrippers. Santa Rosa is an easy drive for bigger city services and the regional airport is closer there. I think the schools based on the rating services and size of student population favors healdsburg for public schools.
