Default Santa Barbara in the winter

In a few days I will leave Sweden to live one year in Santa Barbara, and I am just about to start packing my suitcases.

My question is; How cold does it get in the Santa Barbara area winter time? What's the weather like, and what things should I bring..?

Santa Barbara in the winter is the best time to be there. It gets down to the mid 30s-low 40s during the night. Daytimes are in the 60s and 70s. I find it colder there during the summer time when it is foggy and 60. It will rain but you will get some very nice days in between rains. It is a great place to visit but to expensive to live there.

Winter in SB can vary. The tail end can be the rainy season, if there is rain. It can be as warm as summer for long stretches during the winter months. Year round, no matter how warm it is in the day, it cools down a lot when the sun goes down. But you are from Sweden so at its coldest, SB will feel warm to you.

SB requires dressing in layers because it can be cold in the morning, then very warm during the day, cooling at night. I never ever need or wear anything made of wool. Sometimes I wear my UGG boots & a coat at night during the colder months. I never need a winter hat or gloves. It is a mediteranean climate so maybe that helps if you've been to that area of Europe.

Santa Barbara in December is the same as Sweden in July.

I used to live in the area and as I remember, it goes like this: In the summer you wear the usual summer clothes, but keep a light summer jacket or sweater handy for chilly overcast mornings (the gloom often lasts until noon) and the cool of the evening. In the winter, some people still wear shorts and tank tops during the day, but its really not often hot--I remember wearing long sleeves and light knits most of the fall and winter.

Summer and Fall were the best in my experience. Out of all the places I've lived in California, I found Santa Barbara's weather to be the most gorgeous and tolerable.

The ocean location keeps the summer heat tolerable. Don't look for any rain between April and November. The SW is headed into an unprecedented dry period so an already parched landscape is about to get even more parched. In 2007 we only had 2 inches of rain. Lowest rainfall on record.

Summer can be foggy. Fall is the most beautiful time to visit- i.e. October
