I suggest Pleasant Hill. From here you can take the Bart train to Millbrae and switch to Caltrain to get to Palo Alto. The drive to Sacramento from Pleasant Hill is about the same length in miles as drive from Tracy to Sacramento. In Pleasant Hill you will have better access to the enjoyable activities of the Bay Area on the weekends.

We live in Discovery Bay and our neighbor is in exactly the same situation. The wife works in Sacramento and the husband works at Stanford. They chose Discovery Bay because they claim it is almost exactly the same distance from the center of Sacramento as it is from Palo Alto...65 miles. (Although I think the same is true for Pleasant Hill as capoeira suggested.)

The drive from Tracy or Discovery Bay to Palo Alto is a tough one though--I did it for four years. (There is some public transportation--you can take the ACE train from Tracy to Fremont and take the the Line U Stanford Express to Stanford or take ACE and transfer to Caltrain in San Jose.)

Thanks Capoeira and Maybebaby!!

One more question. Is there any convenient public transport from Pleasant Hill or Discovery Bay or Tracy to specifically Rancho Cordova.

I havent done the commute that direction--hopefully someone else can help--but here is the little bit of info I have...

From Discovery Bay/Tracy:
The San Joaquin Regional Transit District has a San Joaquin Commuter, bus that will take you from Stockton to Downtown Sacramento. From downtown Sacramento you can take light rail to get to Rancho Cordova.

From Pleasant Hill:
I am less familiar with the Pleasant Hill area--the only thing I can think of is taking the Capital Corridor train from Martinez to downtown Sacramento. And again, light rail from Sacramento to Rancho Cordova.
