Relocating
I am a mother of two boys, 17yrs and 6yrs of age. I currently live in Newark New Jersey and I can't take it anymore! I am looking to relocate within the next year. My concerns are community, education, and transportation (I don't have a car at the moment). I don't want to live in the back woods nor do I want to live in an urban jungle. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

I would recommend Chico. It is a university town and has plenty of housing within walking distance from the college. The schools are decent, especially the Montesori school and the Catholic school right in the middle of Chico State. Chico is a very warm, artful community. It has a great downtown section full of shops and great restaurants. It is far from an Urban jungle.

Angel, think long and hard about what you want, what you need and what you can afford. Change it is good. I'm not sure a move all the way to the west coast would be the answer, as there may be places closer to where you are. Have you checked out Wilmington, North Carolina? The whole state of NC is a popular destination for New-York area people who are relocating.
California is awesome but it may not be the ultimate answer for you.

If you are sick of the Jersey weather, California is definently for you. I believe the home prices to be slightly more than New Jersey, but not something your not used to. The Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego give a big town feel. All three have numerous people, with some cities very populated and others very sporadic regarding their respectable counties. I know little about Northern California, except it's very relaxing once outside of San Francisco and San Jose. The weather is balmy, probably 40 to 75 on the coast all year long, and 40 to 95-100 all year long. Not to worry, it's not the humid heat from New Jersey. I've been to New Jersey in the summer, and that humidity is nasty, it's a dry heat in California, kinda like a desert, but not that dry. Southern California has the same weather as Northern California, except for maybe five degrees more warmth in the winter time in contrast to NorCal. If I were you and liked semi-rural, Central California is very relaxing. You should do some research and receive some more facts, because California is enormous in land and people. Just remember, California is full of jobs and diverse people, you must know your commute time from your house to your job, because traffic can be terrible in certain locations. If you felt the information given was a positive, click rate this post positively below my quote. Best of Luck to You! Do some research, then ask more questions, city data has a whole section on each city in the non-forum part.

Thank you all for your information. I do appreciate the suggestions given and I definitely plan to do more research before I just go and uproot my family. If you have any other suggestions or resources please provide them.
Thanks Again.

Move to Reno, get a ski pass at Mt. Rose. Buy a Jeep, explore the desert, spend summer days soaking the sun at Sand Harbor on Lake Tahoe, You will think you have died and gone to heaven. DON"T move to LA!! You have one life,, live that sucker, slide into heaven worn out, used up, saying, "Boy!, that was a great ride!

All of that sounds great but what about the school system and employment? I have two boys that I have to take care of.

There are schools everywhere, what your kids make of their schooling is completely up to you, always. Schools in Reno are like schools everywhere else, there is good and bad.
Employment? Reno is the service center for Northern Nevada and Northeastern California. Just about any job imaginable is found here, and the area is growing, so there will be even more of those jobs. In fact, I wish all those who whine about California would move to Reno. Leave California for those who appreciate it.
Don't live for your job, make your job provide what you need to live.

Thank you so much for your insight. I will research this area further and I will be making travel arrangements to see all of what you're talking about.
