Where have all the hippies gone?-Humboldt county!
Wander into any town in Humboldt county and you will soon realize that marijuana is the main industry of the local economy. But stay out of the woods or you might get shot by some of the illegal Mexican gangs 'farming' on federal land.

My husband just got orders to goto Humbolt Bay and from everything I've read it just makes me sick to think of living there for 4 years. I've been perfectly honest with my husband... I just don't know if I can handle rain, fog, and elk watching. Sounds so freakin' boring! And now I can't wonder into the woods for fear of being shot by some illegal mexican farmers? Oh yeah but the crime rate is low huh? This sounds like a place to retire or go to finish out the remainder of your senior years. Isn't there anything fun or positive about this place? I'm really trying to find ONE thing that appeals to me about this place.

Welcome!
Leave your negative attitude behind and just give it a try. There are many of us who could live anywhere and choose to live here. Don't be a drag on your poor Coastie hubby by bringing along your whiny-brat frame of mind. Your attitude will frame what you find here. Good luck to both of you and check out the many posts on this forum for more information about the area. After a year you won't want to leave.

Leave my negative attitude at home? Are you joking? I've spoken with several coastie wives and they HATE living there and can't wait to leave. Believe me I'm trying not to have a negative attitude. I'm leaving my 4 children and 6 grandchildren on the east coast so believe me when I say there isn't anything positive about moving to the west coast. I've tried reading everything I can about the Humbolt Bay area and I find nothing positive. I noticed the only thing you can do is call me names rather than listing the positive things about the area you seem to be so fond of. Why not expound on the positive things so I will have something to look forward to? If you don't have anything positive to say I dont care to hear your negative name calling. No person has the right to tell another person how they should feel. At my age that's all I've done is make the best of bad situations but I'd rather live my latter years in a more positive atmosphere. So PLEASE list for me all the positives about this area and keep your personal remarks regarding my attitude to yourself.
Thanks,
Susadia

I think his point is that if you've already decided to hate a place before you get there it will probably become a self-fufilling prophecy and you'll end up hating the place no matter what. A positive atmosphere is largely created by one person - you. You create your atmosphere. If you are trying to live your later years in a more positive atomsphere you should, perhaps, look to yourself first.
