Oh yeah but the crime rate is low huh? This sounds like a place to retire or go to finish out the remainder of your senior years. Isn't there anything fun or positive about this place? I'm really trying to find ONE thing that appeals to me about this place.

We just had a spell of really nice weather here, starting from the 12th of this month to yesterday, we were in the upper 60's to low 70's. Eureka is not only the county seat and largest city in the county, but it also has the highest crime rate and most fog. There are more towns here with warmer weather; Fortuna is further inland and much warmer, so is Blue Lake, Glendale, Stafford and Fieldbrook to name a few. Travel time between towns is quick because we do not have heavy traffic. The elk are to the north of here near the Del Norte county border and are right along the highway in the fields. The illegal mexican pot farmers that everyone talks about are doing their business out in the large state and national parks, to encounter one of them, you would have to be hiking far out in the wilderness off the beaten path, not in the local parks or hills. Give this place a chance, there is plenty to do here, many nice hiking trails and parks, clean rivers and nice uncrowded beaches from one end of the county to the other. There are two theaters in Eureka, one is in a large shopping mall, there is plenty of shopping in Eureka in two malls and an old town shopping district. Eureka has a small zoo and several historic forts and parks. Arcata is mainly a college towns surrounded by farms with access to the bay and the ocean. It has shops and bookstores, health food stores and a theater. McKinleyville is a growing bedroom community with two large grocery stores, a large big K, a sports complex for kids, a nine plex theater and a library that is soon to be enlarged. Try listening to some of the positive things that are said about Humboldt county from us that live here and not from those that have only visited. I moved here from the S F Bay area in 1992 and have not regretted it one bit, I feel safer here than I ever did in Oakland or Berkeley. Here I can walk at night without worry. It really is only rainy from late October to January and then usually from about mid March to mid May with the spring rains and it does not rain every day. It rarely gets below 32º and very rarely does it hit the 90's, only once has it hit 100º and that was last May 15th. Our average rainfall is typically around 38 inches for Eureka with some years a bit wetter, but it is nearly always lush and green here on the coast and the mountains are close by with snow pack in the winter. It is very beautiful here.
