In what way? I'm curious because Texas and Oklahoma are the two states I'm looking to relocate to in the next few years. Have heard good things about Oklahoma state but not much about Texas.
Thanks.

Many of the things on my list can be done in Bakersfield, or within a half hour drive of Bakersfield. It's true that some of the things I listed require a longer drive, but the same goes for lots of other cities in California, as you stated. I know when I lived in the San Fernando Valley, everything I wanted to do required me to drive at least a half hour, unless I just wanted to go to the movies or out to eat. I mentioned things like bicycling which can be done along the Kern River bike path (most of the year, at least), and fishing, camping and water skiing which can be done at, or near, Lake Ming. There are museums in Bakersfield such as the Kern County Museum on Chester and the California Living Museum (CALM) near Hart Park. These are just a few examples of what I had in mind when I compiled the list.

In what way- flat apperance. Hot. Blue collar. Fundamentalist influence. Rural. Feels like the middle of nowhere.

I think it is about the people too. When people think of CA I think they picture beaches, palm trees, warm weather, fit people in short shorts or bikinis, or buff shirtless guys, or surgically enhanced women. I think they picture LA. The San Joaquin Valley is so far from being like that. There are more farmers than surfers. Sure, you can drive a couple hours to the beach, but it isn't the California lifestyle I think most people would imagine.

None of those things make Bakersfield Unique. You can find that in just about every CA city or just outside of it. Difference is Bakersfield air quality is probably the worse in the state.

Sad that you all have to bash a city to make you feel good about yourselves, the OP asked a question and you all don't answer with any intelligence what so ever. You don't give the person a chance for a informed decision, just because you don't like it many people do. Grow up and act like a adult.
