ROADDOG? IF YOU ARE IN CALIFORNIA LIKE YOUR LOCATION STATES HOW IS YOUR POST READ 2:34PM WHEN IT'S ONLY 12:08 PM HERE IN WONDERFUL BAKERSFIELD?
i hope I never see you while I am riding my quad in town cause I'll smoke you good. Oh yeah I agree close to Bakersfield are some great riding spots: Gorman is one (can't get in above decibel level), Jawbone another, Pismo and other hidden spots in Bakersfield you can ride until the cops shoo you away. We have one thing in common. The real purpose of life is NOT only to be happy, wrong. If that were true, everyone would not have run out 3 years ago in Bakersfield and bought houses they could not affoard. The purpose of life is to be responsible for my children, husband, make sure all our needs are met and happiness is the cherry on top, right?
Let's agree to disagree cause I need to go ride my quad to forget about this dumb forum and I won't be up at midnight checking posts either.
Oh yeah Bakersfield is great but take it from me (I actually live here) don't move here because you will dislike it greatly

How about Oildale or Taft? Now those are places a young guy can reaaly do well in. I lived in Taft before and then decided that I would go to school so that I wouldn't have to do that again. My opinion is that you would go to school so you can get out of Bakersfield. Not that it is a bad place. Lots of affordable homes in the area. I have friends that commute an hour and a half on a clear day from Bakersfield to Ventura because the pay is better in Ventura and the homes are cheaper in Bakersfield. Mostly families doing that though and not single people. I have known single people living on the coast, get married, buy a home in Bakersfield and commute to other points for work. For those that are lucky to have a job in Bakersfield that is within their field good for them. For the many that don't meet that criteria, then so sorry for the comute time. At the same time now it is more affordable in many parts of the state with the declining housing prices. Why choose Bakersfield? Is the job you are choosing in that area?

Great.
Like Jetjockey said, there is affordable housing on the coast you just don't look hard enough.

An executive recruiter told me years ago that it was hard to get single people in their 20s to move out of the Bay Area or off the coast. They were happy in one bedroom places or having roommates just to live there.
But she said once they got married and had kids, they started calling her asking for help finding a job somewhere that they could afford to buy a house with a yard for the kids to play in.
What became important was family, not the place where they lived.

Carlos Castaneda wrote, "The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same."
I believe cities are like people and jobs. They all have good and bad.
I've lived in places where I had to shovel snow everyday, or run an extension cord out to the car to plug in a block heater so the engine doesn't freeze, and I've even had my car spin out on a freeway in Dallas after an ice storm.
Sorry those weren't for me.
And I've lived in places where the humidity is so high you step outside at 7AM and your clothes are immediately soaking wet, so much for the morning shower before work.
No thank you.
I thought my wife was perfect when I met her years ago, smart and funny and cute. I felt lucky that she put up with me and my faults.
Now that we are married I could only focus on HER behaviors that annoy me, actions I don't agree with, her aging body, etc. I could make only negative comments about her to friends.
But all that would only make me unhappy and miserable if that was all I saw and did and said.
Instead I accept that I am not perfect and neither is she. In fact neither is life.
I focus on my wife's positive aspects and the reasons I first married her. Fortunately, she does the same and we have a good marriage.
That doesn't mean that we are right for other people, but we are right for each other.
I would defend my wife from negative comments made by other people. And I would NOT make negative comments about other people's relationships, everyone is different.
Life is too short to be miserable. You don't like someplace then move, don't like the job then quit, don't like the relationship then get out.
But if you chose to stay, don't dwell on the negative.
And don't assume that what you think is negative will be looked at the same way by someone else. We are all different.

Well I grew up in a city and had a great time. I didn't need a back yard I had plenty of kids to play with and things to do. It's a different style of up bringing and I enjoyed it. Kids can go play in a park which is what we did. A park in the city. I'm married and have a kid on the way and have no plans of leaving my measly 1100 sq ft. Condo in the city for a bigger suburban house with a back yard. No thanks.

Different strokes for different folks, right?
Some people want city, some rural, some suburban.
But what you prefer is not what everyone else prefers, so to insult other ways of living was uncalled for.
Using terms like "wasteland" doesn't respect that not everyone wants to live the same way as you.
I'm glad you can live where and how you prefer, but don't make it out to be the only or best choice for everyone.
I used to do the condo life, but hated sharing a wall with a neighbor. Too much noise passed through.
I used to rent a place right on the beach in Florida. Opened the windows and listened to the waves at night. But I eventually got tired of the noise during the day from beachgoers. It sometimes felt a John Candy movie.
I also have lived right in a city, I used to have an 2 bedroom apartment in downtown LA on Bunker Hill. I could walk to work but I didn't find enough things that I liked to do at night. I want room to work on restoring a car, gardening, etc.
Now I have a house with a yard (and that is with no kids at home) but I like gardening and home projects, peace and quiet, and room to spread out in the house. It may not be your choice but for me at this time in my life it is perfect.
Also, how far from where you live would gorideaquad have to go to be allowed to ride a quad? Sounds like they could do that close to where they live in Bakersfield, not drive an hour or 2 just to do it. In a more urban city it would be difficult to just hop on the quad and start riding.
So again, different strokes.
