I grew up and visit Nortern California about once a month, I currently live in Central California(Sacramento) and I was born and lived for several years(10) in Southern California. Northern California is absolutely more laid back.

There are no boring places, only boring people.

Kdog brings up a great point, but if you want something less philosphical i give you this:

SAN JOSE the fun never stops (http://sanjose.org/visitors/thingstodo/things.php - broken link)

If you don't want to have fun, you aren't going to have fun.

16 year olds can't even get into spots that make LA what it is. I actually have no idea what you're talking about. LA real life not cyberspace? What?

Overall, I think Northern California is more laid back. More rural areas
and lower population density to begin with. Easier to escape the stress of the cities. Mellower, low key people. Kind of a cross between the woodsy Pacific Northwest and the sunnier southland.

I would not consider the Bay Area as being laid back. Just the traffic plays a big part in the overall vibes of the place to me. I'm sure there are plenty of places and lifestyles that would be considered "laid back" in this environment however.

Parts of Southern Cal would definitely be laid back. Surfing areas, deserts etc.

My definition of laid back would include low stress, fun people, good vibes and low/moderate cost of living. Getting hard to find anywhere....
