Which is a better city?
I personally like Santa Maria more.
Santa Maria has a gang problem.
Visalia has a druggy problem
Santa Maria has SLO downtown shopping nearby.
Visalia has more shopping.
Santa Maria has cooler weather
Visalia has hotter weather.
Santa Maria is in a suburb.
Visalia isn't in a suburb.
Santa Maria is close to the ocean
Visalia is close to Yosemite and Sequoia National Forest Park
Santa Maria has bad schools
Visalia has good schools.
Visalia has more traffic than Santa Maria
Both have OK malls.

Lets see,
INC Magazine just released its 2008 Best Cities for Business rankings which are based on job growth.
Visalia/Tulare County was #132 in the US
Santa Maria/Santa Barbara was #197
Small Business Resources for the Entrepreneur from Inc.com
Visalia has bus service to Sequoia National Park in the summer, Santa Maria has no way to get to the beach without a car.
City of Visalia - Sequoia Shuttle
Visalia has single-A baseball (Diamondbacks affiliate), Santa Maria doesn't have minor league baseball, just semi-pro.
Visalia Oaks: Home
I think Visalia has a better downtown of the two.

Visalia is bigger, so naturally it will have a bigger and better downtown, and also for having a baseball team.
And it's true there isnt much job growth in Santa Barbara county because the jobs are already there.

Yeah, if you want to put it that way. Santa Maria has higher poverty.
But the county of Santa Barbara is better in comparison to Tulare County job wise.

Well I'm confused then????? Your question is which one is better.
First off are we talking about the actual city or what is around it? A good city can be in a bad region or a bad city in a good region.
Things that are 30 or 40 miles away like shopping or beaches/mountains may not be considered amenities by some anymore due to high gas prices because they are too expensive to reach.
Then secondly you say you like Santa Maria but reasons to like one city over another vary by person. Everyone weighs things differently.
For example, the median household incomes in Visalia and Santa Maria are almost identical (so maybe not better jobs in Santa Maria) but the cost of housing in Santa Maria is higher. Some people would prefer to be closer to the coast but some people would prefer to spend the money on a larger house or put money into other things besides housing.
Or, for example, as you admit Visalia schools are better. That might be the reason for some people to say it is the better city if they have children.
So are you looking for other opinions or are you simply looking to argue and defend your own choice?
Nothing wrong with your preference but it seems like you try to discount other people's choice and reasons if they are different than yours. I accept your reasons for Santa Maria as a choice but I don't look at them the same way.
