Two more things, as far as health food goes Orchard Nutrition center is good, as previously mentioned. There are also 3 or so Farmer's Markets in the summer and Azure Standard has a drop off route here. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Azure Standard, but it has amazing prices, check them out online azurestandard.com

The other thing, I also don't know if Redding is considered Liberal or Conservative, but I find that people here are pretty open minded. With that said, I guess you will also find an element of people that are quite closed minded and with the good ol' boy mentality. I find it pretty easy to stay away from that element though.

My wife is a teacher here(science AP),, having taught in the Bay Area and L.A. she has a pretty good perspective on California education and schools.. Redding schools will not help your child be brillant.. but they can provide basic education.. private schools do exist here... as do charter schools (another nice way of saying,, we cant make it as a regular school because we cant meet state standards.. so we'll call ourselves a charter school... mediocrity I think).

Can you let me know the salary range for a teacher (elementary grades) in Redding??
THANKS!!

Thanks for all of the info on the health food options. I'm really trying to be better about healthier living and eating, so this would be important to me. I have been looking into taking a trip out to Redding this Spring, but flying into Redding is so expensive!! I may have to look into flying into Sacramento and renting a car...

Boy.. I know about it being expensive to fly in and out of here... but.. it only takes 45 minutes to be at San Fran and go anywhere,,, The drive from Sacramento up to here is unremarkable,,, flat ugly burnt out in the summer.. 120 miles or so..the last 25 have you approaching more scenery, mountains, and some green if its the right time of year... I fly just to avoid the drive,,, and after a rental and gas its almost a wash.. I use mileage with United Shuttle.. Flying in at least once is important because the aerial view gives perspective that you cant get any other way..
You could always rent a plane and go up with a pilot for an hour and have them fly you around... probably still be cheaper than flying the commercial ticket. The commuter airlines make up for all the discount fares out there

Teachers pay scale.. elementary ,which appear to have the most jobs offered here.. so thats good for you!, hover around 32k full time, $10.00 hr as a sub....pitiful by other cities pay scales in California. You'll need a California certification or waiver (which arent currently being granted because there are soooooooooo many teachers here). CBEST/CSET/Praxus are given at Chico State,, or were,, I think Shasta College (local community) has early childhood education testing.. (they have an online catalog)

Redding is a good spot for many adventures beyond its city limits.... it is the largest city before the Oregon border

WE got dumped with 5 inches of snow yesterday... I SO need to get out of here!!!
It seems like one of the biggest "negatives" about Redding is the expense of traveling/flying from its airport. I've also built up all of my miles on American, which will do me no good in Redding. ...Guess I'll have to switch to using United if I move there.

2.39.. to over 3 bucks.. its always expensive here.. apparently because it has to be "trucked" here.. its cheaper in Oregon where it is always full serve..and they have to trnsport it further... go figure...

California taxes everything

$2.39 is about what I pay here in IL, too. The lowest I've seen it recently was at $2.09, and the highest was about $2.80. I don't recall hitting the $3 mark. Gas prices are high everywhere. I had just heard that it was much worse in CA, but it seems to be about the same.

Default houseboat rentals

I was looking on-line today for houseboat rentals in Redding, and there are so many options! I was thinking about renting a houseboat temporarily while doing apartment hunting. Could anyone recommend a reputable company to rent from??

star... all the marinas are pretty reputable here...I havent heard anything good or bad about one over the other

Silverthorn ( on the pit river arm of the lake if you are looking at map) quieter

Bridge Bay (right on the 5,, might be pretty convenient)

Digger Bay

the others are farther north around lakehead..too far to commute conveniently.... remember .. its a big lake

One thing about Redding.. it might be growing but in some ways its still small town.. if you screw someone everyone will hear about it.. I think it helps keep some people reputable

I didnt think they were that cheap to rent... I would think a decent hotel would be cheaper (holiday inn.ramada.. maybe even the red lion).. decent is subjective here.. you wont find any 4 star hiltons
Living on the lake wont be convenient to town... 30 plus minutes away.. and if the weather is bad,,, yuck.. who wants to be on the lake..
