I loved your picture of W. Von Braun. The one thing that I miss about HSV is going to the VBC for the hockey games.
I also lived in TO as well as just about every city in VTA. Co. smile

We were in Kings Deer in COS now in Hampton Cove in HSV. There's a lot of parallels with COS and HSV, lots of similar work. I grew up in Canoga Park.
Check out my Huntsville photos including the Von Braun Center (these taken yesterday) at the bottom of this thread:

The problem I had with Ventura County is most of the (systems engineering, aerospace) engineering jobs have sorted have fizzled away - most of them are in El Segundo and south into Orange County. Mugu isn't doing too much anymore now that F-14 is gone. Rocketdyne is sort of sputtering along. Litton is OK but they are a standalone Northrop Grumman facility. I worked at all these places. No more Hughes. No more Teledyne. No more Lockheed. If I moved back to California before I retire it would most likely be to Orange County were jobs for me are.
Where does your husband work? SAFB by any chance? Where abouts in COS do you live?

Great pictures. Thank you! I love how the area around the VBC and Embassy Suites look with the water. How nice. Have you been to Bennett Nurseries for their great BBQ(I think on the weekend only), free Starbucks and glass bottles of Coke & Dr. Pepper? They also have a G-scale train and live music. They also have a area where they sell fish and have a great outdoor pond to sit and relax next to. If you have kids they can feed the large goldfish. It is located on North Memorial Parkway. I should probably join the HSV group. smile
We have lived in the HSV area three times. Once in Mt. Carmel (loved it) and twice in Madison in the Edgewater neighborhood next to Lady Ann Lake.
In COS before the last Huntsville move we lived in Meridan Ranch next to the golf club. Both my husband and I work out at SAFB. When did you move to HSV?
What a small world!!

I think that the jobs for us in California would also be either OC or SD. I do miss the California weather. I am not looking forward to winter coming. It is on the way. I have heard that our winter should be a strong one this year. Were you here in COS two years ago for the blizzard at Christmas time? We got snowed in for days. Fun, but enough is enough. I hated the humidity of HSV and the beetles.

Okay, I remembered the name of the beach in Oxnard that had that huge power plant and people road dune buggies. We called it Arnold's Beach.

Here's a 1967 photo of Highway 101 going NORTH prior to the Kanan Exit (note that Denny's is STILL there). And right behind the billboard advertising the new homes in Lake Lindero (at $23,000) was that winery (was it called Brookside??). My parents used to drive there when we were kids and we'd play out in the parking lot & fields while they drank wine. The 101 used to be peppered with these billboards. The only thing on the other side of the freeway was Whizins.

What a neat shot. If you have more, please post them.
There is a Thousand Oaks photo database in the Thousand Oaks Library catalog. Lots of neat photos, unfortunately, the retrieval tool isn't too good.

Greetings,
I stumbled across this thread while searching for something else on Google, and felt compelled to comment. First off, what a great bunch of pictures this thread has! I love them!
My name's Chris, and I've lived in the city of Ventura since 1986. I can honestly say that there's no other place I'd rather be. I absolutely love this area, and everything it has to offer! Where else can you go cross country skiing in the morning and surfing that afternoon? I've lived in Wisconsin, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Western Australia. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to 5 of the Earth's continents, and through 43 of this countries 50 states. Every place I've been has had it's own special qualities, but none of them offer me all that I get to enjoy by living in Ventura. I'm not trying to sell anything, I just really love it here.
Anyway, I've got some pictures that I thought I'd share that might bring back some memories for some of you folks.
If these show up in the order I uploaded them, they are of:
1) Pine Mountain Inn, up above Ojai.
2) View of the valley between Santa Paula and Ojai, taken from up on Sulphur Mountain Road.
3) I took this picture from Two Trees, up above Ventura, looking towards Ojai.
4) This is a pic of Kevin Costner in downtown Ventura (you can see City Hall in the background) last summer when he premiered his latest movie here.
5 - 8) These are pictures I took from The Cross, above downtown Ventura, in August while the County Fair was taking place.
Enjoy!
Take care,
~Chris
