Small college/resort town with retirees. Nothing urban feeling at all about the place.

What is the city feel regarding gays and lesbians? I have heard that San Luis Obispo is a pretty diverse city.

A good portion of people from Exeter, Tulare, Dinuba, Farmersville, Three Rivers, Lemon Cove, Orosi, Hanford etc etc all commute to Visalia for work. Not to mention Many student commute to Visalia's community college. Also, why is Macy's the standard? Is Gotchalks all the different? What if a city has a Nordstroms instead of a Macy's, is it automatically downgraded to a Suburb? Just food for thought.

one more thing. Visalia has Two Lowes, a second Home Depot and second Target being built. Two Malls (one is run down, but still). Not to mention one of the Better downtown's around. Oh, and we can't forget the Visalia Oaks baseball team.

I said an area has to have a Macy's and Costco within 20-30 minutes. And a majority of urban cities are gonna have a Macy's, and not a Nordstrom. give me one example of a city with like a nordstrom, sears, and some other department store. it isnt gonna happen.
I dont necessarily classify an area on having both costco and macy's to be urban. Visalia doesnt have the state college, it doesnt have the major airport, and it doesnt have all the amneties. Folks in Visalia have to commute. And the smaller cities besides Dinuba and Tulare have low population density, which means they are rural cities surrounding a suburb.
I dont see what your saying about ppl commuting to Visalia's community college. People commute from local areas to better jr. colleges all the time. State colleges have ppl coming from all over to the college, and the big colleges bring in the tax revenue to the cities.

San Luis Obispo has Mervyns, Home Depot, Costco, Gottschalks, Sears, Ralphs, and soon to be in SLO is Macy's and Kohl's.
SLO has:
-tourism
-tons of shopping
-downtown street shops (where Macy's & upscale clothing chain stores r)
-nearby outlet mall at the beach
-tons of movie theaters and entertainment in area
-major airport
-train station
-a good state college
-a community college
ppl drive from all parts of SLO county to work and do business in SLO. and SLO is generating tax revenue to be self sufficient city that makes it a charter city.
Visalia citizens have to commute to Fresno to get to all the amneties or drive to several cities in the area.

SLO is a very open, accepting city as far as gays/lesbians go, from what I have witnessed. I have seen all ages of couples here and feel that no one seems to be affected, quite different than Paso Robles, where I feel it's still the 'cowboy way'.
As far as the 'urban' thing goes, where do I fall? I live about 40 miles east of SLO, about the same distance to Paso and Atascadero.

I always heard that SLO has a very large lesbian community. I believe people here are very open and tolerant.
