I'm more in favor of merging states, especially the small eastern ones, than dividing them--with the exception of Texas, would could be divided 3 ways. If it were up to me to draw a new US map I would do the following:

1. merge all of New England (any state east of New York) as one state, with the capital in Boston
2. merge the Virginias
3. merge the Carolinas
4. merge NY, PA Maryland, Delaware and the Eastern portion of Ohio
5. working with and around the Great Lakes is difficult. So I would merge western Ohio, all of Indiana, the lower peninsula of MI, and maybe even IL.
6. merge the Upper Peninsula of MI with WI.
7. leave Minnesota as is.
8. merge Kentucky and tennessee.
9. merge Alabama and Georgia
10. leave Florida alone
11. merge Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas
12. merge Missouri and Iowa
13. merge the Dakotas
14. leave Kansas and Nebraska alone
15. give the north panhandle of Texas to Oklahoma
16. give the south panhandle of Texas to New Mexico
17. divide California into 2 states
18. merge WA and OR
19. merge northern WY with Montana
20 merge southern WY with Colorado

Stop trying to fix `everything with radical designs. Elect a new government and saddle them with one job. Make the State financially sound or get fired.!!!

Hence, there is no true discussion to any of this ... it is all mute, since the possibility of a State separating is null and void! Perhaps these illiterate Americans need to go back to school, they might learn something about Political Science/Government History and the many various laws governing it. Not to mention, I doubt the Federal Government would ever allow it anyway... Idiots!
Not true! The wetern counties of Virginia seceeded from the remainder of the state after the Civil War to become a new state (West Virginia). And the 'Toledo Strip' of the MI territory was given to OH when it became a state, allowing the MI territory to then annex the Upper Peninsula. I guess they didnt teach that in history class.

Talking Split California into 58 different states

I think California should split into at least 58 different states. The Noe Valley neighborhood in San Francisco between 22nd and 30th Street between Castro and Dolores Street should become its own state, the Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley between Edinger and Warner and Euclid and Brookhurst Avenues should become its own state, Oakland should become its own state, Dunsmuir California and certain parts of Los Angeles should become a state (they would be connected by a 600 mile long inch wide strip extending from downtown LA along interstate 5 all the way to Dunsmuir near the Shasta Mountain. The house located at 1267 North Palm Avenue in Fresno California should become its own state (that state would be known as the state of 1267 North Palm Avenue). Albert Fernandez from Modesto California should become his own state, except his left hand will be another state (but only on Wednesdays between 8:30AM and 11:47PM). The futon in my living room will become its own state. Does this sound crazy? Yes it does. So does splitting California up. Leave California alone, you turds. We've been through tough times before. We've survived the civil war, 2 world wars, the great depression and 7 seasons of "Who's The Boss" starring Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, Tony Danza, that gay kid, and that old drag queen. We'll get through this again

I think splitting California into five states or more probably would be a good idea. As an ex-Californian now living in Oregon, the only way to save the state would to split it up and as proportionate as possible, with the 58 counties that belong to that state, split them up equally. Also, we simply need more political parties in all levels of politics. It would give the main two parties something to think about.

Actually, the history of WV has gone through some major changes in the last 40 years. The creation of the new state was more a war-time measure by the Federal government than any wish by the people in WV.

Actually with Oregon and Washington, it would be great to make those two states into three. Leave Oregon and Washington as land west of the Cascades and create a new state east of the Cascades. Many of Oregon's counties are tired of Multnomah politics and it always seems that that county controls the state's policies. So, to be fair, it would be great to see a whole different state with the capital being either Spokane, Bend, or perhaps Pendleton. This state would be much like Idaho where the main cities aren't that big and people are generally happier.

Default California One,Two ,Three,Four

Split it up????I don't think so!!! Then the U.S. Gov. would be supporting three more BROKE states ,than they are now...

Calif. One....The border to South L.A.
Calif. Two....South L.A. to Santa Barbara
Calif. Three....Santa Barbara to San Francisco
Calif.Four....San Francisco to Oregon

# 1...More fence and Border Patrol

#2...More Cops and Drug Dogs

#3 ...Same as #2

#4...More cops to get the Tree huggers

I don't think you want to even go there...Plus now we have to change the Stars and Stripes...

Just rename the state you already have Taxafornia....

When the BIG ONE (earthquake)hits the state will be small anyways....Less places to send money

Northern New England (VT, NH, ME) would never go for merging with Southern New England. We in VT have some not so pleasant names for people from MA, CT, etc...one of them is flatlander...
