Moving to Monterey - Jobs?
Hello!
My husband and I are moving to Monterey this fall because he is attending NPS. However, like most people and civilians, I need a JOB! Does anyone know where most people commute to from Monterey? We'd be looking to live in Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach (renting). I tried looking on Monster and Craigslist, and jobs are coming up quite scarce (HR). Also, if there are any additional websites that CA uses to post jobs, that'd be more than helpful as well.
Thanks so much!
Liz

Your're going to need a couple of jobs if you plan to move to Carmel, Pacific Grove or Pebble Beach. They are all upscale, expensive areas. Pebble Beach is a gated community with $million+ luxery homes surrounding golf courses and I don't think they have any rentals there.
Think about Seaside or Marina just north of Monterey. There may be some areas of Monterey that are not overpriced, but not anywhere near the ocean.
As for a job, that might be difficult. Tourism, the government and I suppose retailing are about the biggest things going on in the Monterey area. Check out the job listings in the Monterey County Herald www.montereyherald.com/hotjobs

Hi Liz,
I just read what you posted about Monterey. I noticed it was last year when this was posted and I was wondering if you guys are now in Monterey. The reason I ask...I am in the same situation you were in. My husband will be attending the Naval Post Grad School. If you are there now, please let me know your recommendations re what areas to live in. Any info you give will be greatly appreciated and most helpful. We are moving from Norfolk, Va and no nothing of the Monterey area. We are very excited! I hear it's gorgeous out there.

The Defense Language Institute is in (or near?) Monterey. Government jobs are probably your best bet.
Or you could do an insane commute from San Jose or Santa Cruz.

Monterey always seemed as though it was very isolated and more of a turista destination. To do anything or get anywhere you need to drive for major airports, shopping or healthcare. Cost of living is very high! And, the towels are kinda scratchy!
As for jobs, it appears limited in that respect unless you have something lined up.

Hi Kelli,
I moved here with my wife and three children last year. So I can answer some of your Qs from our perspective in living here currently.
Our favorite town is PG and we found a nice 'little' rental home here through Craigslist. You are right in that it is a beautiful place to live. Hence the high COL. But it is worth it for us and I am sure you will both really enjoy your stay while attending NPS. If you like the outdoors at all it is awesome here with Big Sur in your backyard and Yosemite ~4 hours away.
As far as areas it really depends what you like, are looking for and your max budget. Also you didn't mention if you have kids. If so schools are a consideration as well. PG, Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach and Del Rey Oaks are all very nice. Carmel Valley is also nice but a longer drive to school. Seaside and Marina have some ok and not so ok areas.
I would stay away from Salinas due to gang problems and crime in general. Although there are places on the outskirts that can be fine such as Spreckles, Inidian Springs and Las Palmas. But I don't think these should be your first choice as it is also further from NPS and other kinds of things you might prefer (shopping, the coast, etc...).
If you have any further Qs feel free to ask.
Derek

Maybe you guys can live in Santa Cruz. Your husband can commute to Monterey, and you can commute to San Jose, or maybe get a job in Santa Cruz. Jobs in Monterey are going to be scarce, so maybe it would be better to live closer to silicon valley.

Kelli,
What kind of jobs are you looking for? Posting additional information about your experience/skills would be helpful for the posters who currently live in Monterey. I am a bit out of touch of what's going on in Monterey since I moved out of the area years ago.
